Hi Mike,

Of course, the timberheads! I had to buy some wood for those too. Mine is coming along OK. I got a little frustrated when coppering the rudder and trying to make the pintles and gudgeons, I was trying to do it the way it was done in the Passaro Practicum but ended up ditching the wire bits and faking it a little bit. I'm at the point now where I want to rigidly mount the model to a base so that I don't have to handle it at all but I can't quite decide how I want to do it. I wanted to use brass pedestals but I can't seem to find the shorter one with a 5/32" slot in it. You'd think there would be a large variety of those available but everybody seems to have the same 3 or 4 sizes that Model Expo has. Now I'm playing around with some bits of mahogany with a thought towards making a combination cradle/pedestal thing. Not sure that's gonna work out though!

Where are you with yours?

Dan

I bought pintles and gudgeons from Bluejacket Ship crafters for my ship. This might be a solution for you. I haven't installed them quite yet.

I got engaged about 3 months ago and I've been spenting time planning the wedding etc. I don't have any progress to report. Hopefully, I can change that this week.

Mike,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You'd better get as much done on your Phantom as you can between now and the big day though, you'll never touch it again afterwards. Just kidding, hopefully your wife encourages your hobbies the way mine does.

I almost bought those pintles & gudgeons from Bluejacket, I think they would work just fine but I didn't feel like waiting for them. My rudder is done and I'm going to live with it, it doesn't look too bad.

Here's a few more pics of my Phantom to show all the progress I've made. I started making the chainplates out of brass and got 3 done when I found out that Bluejacket sells the deadeyes with the chainplates attached so I ordered some of those and they really worked well. I've now got all the cleats, eyes and pins in place around the bulwarks and tonight I finished up the traveler at the rear of the deck and had my first experience dealing with a block, they are small!

Thanks! Julie has no problem with my hobby of choice. She would rather see me working on a ship than sitting at a bar. She actually likes to see how things turn out.

Mike,

You need to get going on yours, this is a lot of fun! I got most of the deck furnishings built this weekend and started gluing them in place today. Still have to build the forward companionway but that shouldn't take too long.

Dan,
Your Phantom is coming out great! Truly one of the better ones I've seen. Your attention to detail is really showing true. Nice work.

Don't forget to read ahead in the practicum. There are a few deck fittings (eyelets and blocks, I believe) that Chuck forgot in the earlier chapters, and mentions in later chapters. You'll want to install them before you install the masts.

Keep up the awesome work!

Ben,

Thanks for the kind words! I was just looking at yours again and I'm amazed at how neat and sharp everything is, if mine turns out half as well as yours I'll be happy.

Thanks also for the heads-up about looking ahead in the practicum, I only skimmed through it at first and have been reading it in detail only a few steps from where I've been in the build so I will take the time to read through it in detail before going too much further.

Default Re: Phantom 2008 Bulwark Stanchions

I am working on the addition of the bulwark stanchions and wanted to share something that is working for me.

As mentioned in Passaro's practicum, the model does NOT come with the right size wood for these pieces. I spoke with the various retailers to try and get wood of the right size as he recommends, but were not successful. Oh, they had wood of that size, but it was Walnut or some other expensive variety and also needed to charge me more in shipping than the small amount of wood was worth. So, I cast about for a different idea.

I stopped by a Michael's in my neighborhood and scanned their small area of Balsa and hobby woods. I picked up one stick of the smallest wood rod they had. It cost me $1.89 for a three foot length.

It is way too wide for the stanchions on this model. So, what I did was lay it down on my mat, and carefully slice into it with my X-Acto knife at midpoint. I only did this for a two inch length. I then rotated the rod by 90 degrees and repeated the process. When I finished slicing through it, I cut the two inch length off and had 4 wood sticks that I think look pretty good as stanchions.

Now, I measured and cut each to length and glued them on the model. When I run out of wood, I repeat the process above. I am more than three quarters of the way around the deck and like how it looks and how simple (and inexpensive!) this process is. I am sure that others here have tried it so I would appreciate comments on how to improve this further.

Thanks,

MacGruff,

Sounds good! I've never had much luck cutting a stick like that and keeping the sides square so I bought 1/16"x1/16" basswood from Model Expo for mine, it worked well but proved to be prone to splitting when I drilled it for cleats, eyes, etc.
