Russ and Don --
"I have always made a jig for assembling gun carriages." As Russ says , a jig is the way to go . I had some trouble in the beginning stages building my cannon carriage , until I made a jig. after that , no problems . Works for real full size carriages as well as small scale carriages . HOLD FAST !

Thanks guys here is picture of my side pieces. I made small brass template with the steps and I cut them two at a time and number them so I know the steps are the same and so I don't mx them up.
I made a drawing so anyone can layout the steps and this will work for full size or model ships. This was the correct method of laying the steps and was used by most nations as early as 1748.

Don:
A few things you should not forget in your pattern are 1) the cutaway along the bottom of the bracket, 2) the mortices for the ax trees in the bottom of the bracket, and 3), the location of the bolts for the tackle and the bedstool bolt. Your template will be much more useful if all of these details are included. All of these details can be calculated from the tables I posted a while back. Russ |

Here is the next step. I took your advice Russ and added a few more details to my template.
Gary, as far as I can tell from my research the axles did not turn. They are solid blocks morticed to accept the side pieces and the ends turned to the diameter of the shot. I am working on updating the drawing I posted earlier but I am not ready to deliver it yet. I have been pulling most of my information from John Muller's book Treatise of Artillery which was the standard hand book for artillerist in England and was most likely adapted as the model for American artillery. It's an excellent resource Gary and if you are planning to get into the cannon making business you shouldn't be with out it. It's available through Amazon Books.
