Chuck:
I'll my vote in for "shoe polish" right now (tan), it does an outstanding job on decks, and your sides are almost the same color. The model is looking great.

Chuck --
The nore I see this new POB , the more I want to build her . What type of cannon did she carry ? Will the model show open ports with the guns run out or closed ports ? HOLD FAST !

There will be eight dummy cannon supplied with the kit. I imagine most will show the model with all eight ports opened and guns run out. I will show the ports closed on the port side and open on the starboard. She wasnt a warship so I figured I owuld go both ways. I like the way a closed port looks also.

I agree with you about the gun ports - I prefer to have them closed , at least on the lower gun decks .

Thanks Anne.
Folks have been doing this for some now. It works vrey well. The trick is to select the right sized drill bit for the job. Then after drilling your holes sand the planks smooth. Then you should use an awl to gently ream each hole to remove any ragged edges left by drilling. It creates a nice round hole. Then smear some watered down wod filler into the holes. Wibe off any excess with a damp towwel as Emer's is water based. Then sand the hull again and stain. It would have taken days to treenail the hull traditionally with actual treenails. This method took just a few hours. Chuck |

I am heading on vacation for a week at the beach with the family. I will finish painting the Model while there. Here is a sneak peak. It will be toned down eventually but notbefore I take B&W pics first. The pattern looks better and will show up better before I mute the colors. I think it looks Ok so far. I am a very slow but meticulous painter. What you see here took me a few days.
This is the color scheme that Baker developed for the Mayflower II when it was launched in 1956. I think its the best one. In my opinion the replica colors today are more about economy than accuracy. The more elaborate geometric pattern wouldnt have been used on a small insignificant merchant vessel like the Mayflower. Chuck ![]() ![]() |

While on vacation and spending a hard day at the beach I would paint for an hour or so during the evening. I managed to finish the hull up. I distressed it a little and antiqued it. I am happy with the results. I only have to make and install the port lids and do the beakhead during the week and it will be done for now. I will return to work on the Syren and finish this when its done.
I enjoy the painting process alott and find it really relaxing. Any comments are always appreciated. ![]() ![]() Chuck |
