Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Thanks all, for the tips. None of our three local hobby shops carried it (or even knew what I was talking about when I asked) so I went with Chucks lead at:
http://www.bluejacketinc.com/

Also the lead from Davit is very usefull. I would never have thought to clean the parts first with hydrocloric acid - which I have in large quantities (at work) and use it to clean my cymbals when they get nasty.

I have to travel to Mexico City for a couple weeks so if you don't hear from me for a while, don't think I blew myself up or something

Thanks again for the halp.

I just got back to this post and saw Eric R.'s Model of the Newsboy. Chuck you're right, the detailing is superb BUT his Newsboy looks nothing like the Model Shipways version/

Well, I have returned from Mexico and as soon as I'm recovered from Montezuma's Revenge I hope to get back to the Newsboy.

Just prior to leaving I installed the catsheads and such and came to the realization that my bulwark stancions aren't exactly symetrical from side to side. I hope that once I get it completed and there's a little clutter about that it will not be so noticable. They're off by just a bit more than 1/8 inch. Another lesson learned I guess.

Glad to be back home at last!

Finally back out into the garage and into ship building again.

Making the forward cabin, door and ladder. The door is s’posed to look like a three panel door – I used 28 gage wires to make the panels, soaked the door a bit so it was soft, gently squeezed the wire into the wood so it wouldn’t stick out too far, and then super glued them in place. The door frame was glued to the door, and then the whole assembly was glued to the cabin. The door knob is a tiny little brass nail, not quite all the way pushed in.

The ladder was a treat to figure out how to make, it’s so tiny. I made the rails with stand-offs first. Then I cut the rungs to length. I drew a line on a scrap board, transferred the rung spacing from the plans to the line and drilled the appropriate holes at a depth of half the length of the rungs. Then I plopped the rail down on the rungs and prayed the glue was strong enough to pull the rungs out of the holes; and it was. I had to trim just a smidgen (technical term for not-much) off the rungs to even them out and glue the other rail onto them. It was the best idea I could come up with on just one cup of coffee.

Roger:
I agree with Gary, excellent job. No matter what the technique, if it works it's good.
I think some modelers say "but, this is the way the instructions say to do it, and it doesn't work.". The trick is to find a way that works for "you". That's how "new techniques" are developed, and passed on (hopefully) like here on the forum.

The companionway is built and attached now. I did my skylight window bars a little different than suggested in the instructions, too. I think it came out looking a bit cleaner.
