I am working on a 1/96 scale RC Gearing Class Destroyer DD858 Postfram (1962)
I have a lot of pictures from books the Web and Seaphoto The Gray paint of the superstructure and the Hull varies from picture to picture From a very light gray to a Bluish light gray and a Bluish green light gray Does anybody have close to the colors or an formula for the gray shades I need Thank You Joseph Wojcik |

Hmm, I wouldn't worry too much about the correct shades of gray, and go for the standard colors offered by for example Tamiya. When you start to mix your own colors, then realize they are hard to reproduce when the models needs repairs.

The color is generally labeled as Ghost Grey (Gray?) (never could get that straight.) When you're looking at pictures, remember that paint weathers and if the hull was repainted at a different time than the superstructure, it will reflect light differently so that you see a difference in color. You could also be seeing the difference between paint batches or even a full scrape down, which makes the primer zinc oxide (greenish) over red lead, and ghost grey over ghost grey.
In short, don't worry about it unless you're looking for something other than a 'fresh from the yard' appearance. Russ2146 Ex- USS Barton (DD722) Ex- USS J. Douglas Blackwood (DE 219) |

I used Tamiya on my Great Lakes Tug Gloss Black. How well does Tamiya Flat hold up with being in water? I like Tamiya it goes on great and sands well
Thank You for your replies |

don't know what current paint companies call it but the USNavy called it "Haze Gray" for the bulkheads and "Deck Gray" for the decks.
haze gray was a flat gray color and deck gray a much darker shade. this was from 1961 to 1966 (my stint as a boatswain's mate, USN in which i came in contact with more gray paint than i care to remember!) |
