Question about planking the Artesania Swift
Hi all,
I have a question about planking my Artesania Swift model. It involves in the first layer of planking. I've seen in some books about cutting a rabbit into the keel for the planks to blend into the keel. Unfortunately, I don't think the plans included in the kit provide enough information for a new modeler like me to perform this task successfully. I've also seen where the keel is fastened to the false keel before planking. The instructions in the kit show the reverse. So, should I attach the keel first and then plank, or vice versa? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jesse |

Hi
I have never made this kit so I can't comment about the false keel. I wouldn't worry too much about cutting a rebate into the keel though. Its an advanced modeling technique that is essential if you want to make a large model look completely authentic, but it isn't needed on smaller models. If you butt the planks closely against the keel and carefully sand them down, no one but you will know that you haven't cut the rebate. Best wishes John |

I have built the kit. What I dud at the fore front of the ship is add balsa between the frames. It allowed me to have material so that the planking had something to glue to while bending the shape. I wouldn't be to concerned with the first planking. You will cover it with the second. Learn how to shape and bend and mold trhe planks now. When you do the second planking it will be easier. Jesse, I did build this kit also, but it was a while ago. As Dave said, it is not really that important on the first layer of planking. I choose to use a different technique though. I purchased a small model makers plane and I bevel the first plank that will fit against the keel/false keel to make a tight joint. On the first layer of planking it is not really that important, but I like to have a good tight joint there to fully support the second layer that gets glued to it. I find that beveling the edge of the plank is often easier than cutting a rabbet into the keel and is much easier to get a satisfactory fir that going through the trouble of rabbeting it. Good luck!

Hi Jessie,
I have a couple of A/L kits under my belt and a few others waiting to be built.... I have attached the keel after the first layer of planking has been completed.... I guess you could do the other way but you may find that the keel components wouldn't line up correctly, i.e. the shape of the keel components is most probably the shape of the ply components plus 1.5mm first planking.
