Hello Dereck,
I make sandpaper "lollypop sticks" for all types of detailed sanding, similar to fingernail emeryboards. I use various lengths of wood (2",3",4",6") and widths (1/4" ,1/2",etc )and profiles (flat, quarter and half-round) in various grades of paper. I use PVA to glue paper to sticks. I also sometimes add small handles for greater grip and purchase. I think this advice now qualifies me as a true ship-modelling "geek"! ps My rank in the forum is Cook. My wife tells me that if this is the case, the crew would be in danger of starving to death. Regards, Rudeau (Chris) |

Hi ChrisThank you for your reply, that is exactly what I need. I had better go and buy some lolly sticks. Dereck |

You can also protect the area not to be sanded with masking tape.

I use the Proxxon Pen Sander; it has several different shaped heads that are very small, ideal for ship modeling. It is a power tool with variable speeds. It is great for both plastic and wood, and the heads fit into very tight corners. Check it out on the Proxxon website.

Another twist to keep in mind: paddles are not the only way to go on that road. I found that making a paddle from a 3/4" square stick with the end cut to about 45 degrees or so with the sandpaper stuck on the angled end allows better access to corners and such.

The Proxxon Pen Sander has such heads. They come in both straight and angled positions. The sanding heads come in square, triangular, rectangular, and circular shapes attached to straight and angled stems. You get two sets of each, and the sandpaper comes pre-cut to those shapes. The paper itself has a sticky backing which you simply peel and apply to the sanding head. The sandpaper comes in three grits, 180, 240, and 400. And, the heads are only about half an inch wide with perfect 90 degree corners. They do fit into very tight spots on your model. I recommend it very highly!
