Default Forming brass mouldings

I am building the Royal Caroline and am ready to form the brass mouldings. Are there any tips or suggestions on how to bend/shape and cut the brass strip? Do you cut with saw or wire cutter, etc.? Thanks

The material is decorative brass strip 2.5mm wide by 1.3mm thick. Among other things, it is used for the unsupported curving brass rails at the bow.

I've been doing quite a bit of work with brass lately, and find that the best tool for cutting it is a jeweler's saw. This looks kind of like a coping saw, but is designed for working with metal (e.g., silver and gold). They use very fine toothed blades, which can be used for cutting thin sheet or thicker bar or tube stock. For most applications, I use a 4/0 blade, though for really fine work I move to an 8/0 blade.

You can buy the saw and some blades from MicroMark, or from jeweler's supply houses. Depending on where you live, there may be one of these near you. You might ask a local jeweler about that. Or, you can get them online from various jeweler's supplies. My two favorite are Rio Grande and monstorslayer.com.

It is also worth getting a Jewler's bench hook. This is a small peice of wood that can be clamped to your bench. It will help to support your work while you are cutting. They are quite cheap, or you can make your own. Look at the micromark catalog to see what one looks like.

For simple straight cuts in brass and most other metals I've had good results with diamond coated cutoff wheels / discs that you use in Dremel or similar rotary tools. I also find them to be very good with wood and plastic.

They usually come in sets and include the mandrel(s) and I get mine mostly on eBay.
