Before I was born my father built a great ship model. They moved to their first house and he left it at the condo for last, with the plants, to move carefully. It was stolen. He then started the USS Essex, but his heart wasn't in it. It sat on a shelf for the rest of his life. Now in my 30's, he is gone and I want to finish it. I have NO clue what I am doing!!! I enjoyed talking to the volunteer ship model builder at the USS Constitution museum in Charlestown and he suggested that I "get on the intercom"...so here I am.

It sounds like you have an emotional investment in this build. I would suggest building something else first to learn the ropes, then come back to your fathers ship with the knowledge needed to make your dad proud.

You know what, Jim? That is probably a good idea. Thanks for the thought. It would be kind of fun to build a USS Constitution, since we were just on it!

The USS COnstitution would be even more challenging than the Essex, since she was much larger. More of everything to make, finish, and rig. I suggest starting with the simplest model that appeals to you, like a schooner or a brig. Model Shipways has several such models to choose from, and unlike many European manufacturers, their instructions are in intelligable English.

Listen to what Paul suggests. Learn technique on something smaller, then move up. My first was the Mayflower and it taught me most of what I needed to know to move on. There are lots of posts here on what a good first kit would be.
Again...good luck Slow |

Thank you sirs. I have been eyeing the model shipways Sultana kit, which says it is for newbies. It is not quite as striking, but it does appear to be somewhat pink, so that is a plus :)
