How would I treat the deck of the Titanic, clear varnish or paint, and would I caulk it?
Thanks Harold. aka, Ships cat. |

Hello Harold
As I understand things, the deck would have been unfinished wood rubbed to a uniform color and texture. The color would have weathered to a reddish gray brown to a warm silver gray. No finish was applied. The planks may have been caulked however at the scale of most Titanic models; the calking would be almost invisible, perhaps only a slight darkening of the joints. The appearance would be fairly uniform so a matt silver gray wood colored paint would seem acceptable. For a bit more variation a light stain could be applied, possibly protected by a thin coat of matt varnish. The actual deck would not be varnished or shiny. Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply, I would have been tempted to varnish the decks, maybe with a matt finish. However, I am going to see a model of the Titanic in the Meryside Museum Liverpool, and some of the things that were saved from the ship. So I will wait to see that before I do anything.. But I do like the Idea of the warm grey colour Years ago, I used to go to school with a boy called Lefever, his father was the director of the local bus company. Best wishes Harold |

Here is my $.02 ... If you are going to varnish the deck, use a gloss varnish and then sand it using something in the range of 600 - 1000 sandpaper. You will get a better finish and better penetration of the varnish. The only difference in a matte to a clear varnish is the amount of solids in the matte varnish. You can cancel the effect of a gloss varnish by FINE sanding it. This fine sanding disrupts the ability of the surface to reflect light, therefore giving it a matte finish. There is also a product on the market that is called Micro-Mesh that you can sand to 24000 grit to enhance a gloss finish or deaden any finish to the desired level. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.
