Default Question about treenailstrunnels

Hello all, I have a question about the spacing of treenails. I am building the Bluejacket Jefferson Davis http://shipmodeling.net/vb_forum/th...hip-model-.html The builders manual suggests the use of treenails to secure the planks. It tells me to use 2 treenails on each frame, but only 1 of the plank is 1/8 to 3/16. Most of my strakes are made from 3/16 stripwood, which was supplied in the kit. So if I followed the directions to the letter, most of my hull would have only one treenail at each frame. This sounds incorrect to me. As I look at the photos in the builders guide, almost every plank has 2 treenails. It seems like there is enough room to use 2 treenails amidships. But at the bow, the planks are tapered to a bit over 1/8. So I guess the question is, should I be using 1 or 2 treenails? Attached is a pic of the shear strake. There is only one treenail because it is attached to the stanchions. But it looks to me like there is plenty of room.
Also, do you modelers drill the holes free hand or do you make some kind of spacing jig? Do you drill by hand with a pin vise or do you use a power tool?

I appreciate any opinions or help you may have to offer.

Greg
I think I would take a good look at Chuck's build log of the Confederacy and see what he did, then emulate him.
Can't go wrong then.
Tom

Thank you Tom. Just drilling smaller holes and filling them seems like it could be a lot quicker...and a lot closer to scale. I think that is the process I will use. And thank you Chuck, if you ever see this thread.
