I've been using Marquardt's Eighteenth-century Rigs & Rigging as a source for most rigging information. I've combined what I've learned there with the AOS book on my particular ship, and feel like I have enough information to do a reasonable job. I also use Lennarth Petersson's Rigging Period Ship Models. That's a great source for really clear information.

AOS = Anatomy of the Ship. I have lost track of who even publishes them anymore. At one time it was Phoenix Publications, then The Naval Institute Press, and now, I think it's Conway. I do not know exactly how many ships are in the series, but there are at least six from the 18th century. The books have the same pretty strict format. Author's research is explained in a foreward, followed by a brief history of the ship and a written description. Then, a complete set of scale drawings from the frame to the binnacle. I think some titles go in and out of print. I am using the AOS book on the Endeavour by Karl Heinz Marquardt. As far as rigging goes, Marquardt has done a great job in his drawings which show all the blocks and rigging in enough detail so one can see which lines get served, how blocks are stropped, how certain rigging is lashed, etc.
Automerged Post: Wikipedia has a complete list of titles in the Anatomy of the Ship series. |

Hi Ronald, I see that you have already received some good advice. For a quick simple generic guide, you might also try www.all-model/Rigging .

The all-model site has a book by Lenart Peterson. I asked for it for Christmas and Santa delivered. It seems to be a wonderful book. All drawings...no text. It shows each section of the rigging separately. The only thing I didn't find was the proper rigging sequence.
