I'm having a bit of a problem getting the right shape for the Keel/bow. I've used both the instructions and practicum. I was wondering if I should keep trying as shown. Or is it possible to bend a 1/8" square piece to the shape? I don't want to waste anymore wood. BTW this hiccup is in no way stopping me from finishing. Just looking for alternatives.

A photo would help decide Richard. If I understand you correctly, yes you could make the keel and bend it to shape as needed.

Are you referring to the keel section that wraps around the bow?

Yes that's the part. I kept trying the method you show but can't get that shape right.

Putty works wonders. Get the inside curve as close to the shape of the hull as possible, glue, let dry, and then use putty (I use spackling paste) and sand until it looks good. You cloudl also cut the keel to fit the plans and then use the above procedure. This might help you get the correct hull shape instead of adapting the keel to the shae you've carved out.

Make a card template. Its a lot easier. Start by transferring the shape from the plans. It should be close. Then tweak the card template to fit. You can use the templates that were supplied to check teh hull shape. When you are satisfied, tranfer that shape to some wood and cut it out.
Hope that helps. Chuck |

I did something like Chuck has suggested. I transferred the radius from the template to my keel stock and it became the inside radius. Then I just offset that to get the outside radius. The radius on the bow didn't require a lot of sanding, it was pretty close on my hull.

Thank you all. I got it done, w/ a combo of scribing from the template and some wood filler.
