Well, this was one of those steps I knew was coming up, but put off until this weekend.
My private armed schooner Cora has a modified pilot boat rig, so only carries 2 shroud pairs on the foremast and 1 shroud pair on the mainmast. This means I only needed a dozen deadeyes, which made this a perfect project for trying this out on. I had some old yellow boxwood strips I bought from Model Expo long ago. So, I carved down the edges, making an octagon out of it and then just turned it to dowel by chucking it into an electric drill that was held in a vise. I then marked out lines delineating each deadeye and it's groove for the shroud. Next, I took wood turning tools and cut at each line just enough to form grooves. The actual cutting was done later using a razor saw. For the holes, a cross was drawn on the face of each. I then took a straight pin clamped in a hemostat and poked pilot holes in appropriate locations. Then, I carefully(!) held each in place under my dremel drill press. Normally, the drill press doesn't drill straight enough. but for the short hole, with pilot holes already in place, it worked fine using a #74 drill bit. This was interesting, but not my favorite task. Still, I'm glad I tried it out. On smaller deadeyes, I don't think I'd be up to the task, but these are about 5/32" diameter. The next significant scratch-building task for this model will be the blocks, and I think I'm going to have to start on those shortly. Clare |

There should be an award for working under extreme duress (small scale parts making). Nice job Clare

Well done Clare! I'm a bit behind you on this task, but will certainly be checking this thread again when I get there.
