Got my model! This will be my first attempt at ship building. I'll use this thread to post progress and specific questions.
Here's the kit and my work area. Still need to get tool placement/hanging/etc sorted out... |

Hi Felix,
Congrats on getting the new kit. I really enjoyed building the Swift. It's a nice looking boat that gives you a chance to really focus on hull and deck planking techniques. I made one physical change to my model, which was to replace the forward deck house with a deck hatch grating. But, that was just my preference. Any way you build it, just enjoy the experience! So I spent the weekend working on my woodworking skills, which generally are few, and I made my keel clamp. Came out pretty well, if not maybe a little 'beefy' for this model.
As a stay-at-home dad I am afforded a few minutes here and there to do work in the basement leaving the children under their own supervision, while still within earshot. Today I started gluing the bulkheads to the false keel. This is a 'older' kit, box says 1982, and the pieces are routered and not laser cut. As such there was substantial play between the keel and bulkheads. I was able to work around this by using 4 pieces of aluminum 'angle iron' clamped in and then tweak the bulkhead one way or another to get them in the correct position. I expect to finish the last couple of bulkheads this evening and let it dry overnight. Still pretty intimidated, but excited all the same. |

Question: In thinking forward quite a bit I've decided that even though my kit doesn't come with sails, I would like to have furled sail similar to this picture:
![]() Is there a good resource/reference that might provide information as to how to create this effect of furled sails? Granted it will likely be months before I get to this point, I like to pre-think things well in advance... |

Felix...don't know about the sails but I'm glad you started this kit! I bought a finished hull of the swift on Ebay, and have to scratch build the rest of it...will be looking at your progress for ideas.....welcome aboard...mike

LOL, don't hold your breath. This will be my first kit and when I find the time to work on it, it will be slow progress. It's partially a test of my will power to slow down and try and 'do it right'. Eons ago I did plastic model cars and armor, but always rushed as I got closer to completion, ending up with a product that was not as good as it should of and I could of done.
So I'm trying to stick to using the 'right' tool for the job, or at least close to the right one, measure 6 times-cut once, research before each major step, do physical and mental dry-runs at assembly and what not, etc... In the end I really want to be happy with what I end up with, even if this is my starter model that I expect the most mistakes. That being said, I'm nearly at the point of nailing down the false deck. I've seen that people predrill or don't predrill the holes for the nails. What is your opinons on this? |

Never worry when it comes to spending the time to do it right.
I completed my first a short while ago, the Phantom with the help of Chuck's Practicum. It took me 11 months with a few short breaks, and even then I had a few mistakes and a few more omissions based on taste, and my limited, but growing abilities. I just ordered my first POB the mamoli black prince, which I have read mixed reviews about, but I think It will be a fun challenge. Good luck

Hi Sean, I've completed my Swift of the same generation kitas yours and it was great fun and a good learning curve too. I'd be pleased to help with any queries, email me direct. The hardest bit was fitting the bulwarks and you have to be sure that everything is right as to distance below the deck and length of the ply bulwarks before glueing them in. As for the false deck, just carefully nail it into the underlying frames after applying white glue. Make sure you leave enough time for the glue to set! At least 24 hrs.

So yesterday I laid the false deck. And intersting experience to say the least. It wasn't horrible, but it certainly was a bit more frustrating than I expected.
Basically it all started more or less fine but as I continued I found that the glue was drying before I got some things nailed down. This was due to random nails refusing to "go". I hadn't gotten the #60-80 drill bits yet and to be in the middle of the process I basically needed to finish or have things end up wonky. But in the end I only killed a few nails and it looks pretty fair, but I did not expect to feel like I was on a countdown timer as the glue was drying while I was fighting with those few nails. In hindsight it would have been better to do the first run of nails down the false keel, then clamp it down and then predrill each of the bulkhead nails as I did them. Would have been faster and less frustrating. Next is to shape the bottom of false keel to the bulkheads. Should be fairly easy short of having had to replace the front hull supports with larger pieces of wood, because if I'd used the ones in the kit I would have needed to fill about half the space with filler putty. Generally I think I chose poorly using oak as it is going to be really annoying to get shaped down, but he wood was on hand. Next time I'll use something a little softer. I'll post pics later today or tomorrow. |
