Being a brand new member I feel a bit guilty making my first post a request but I recently intercepted this kit being taken by a friend to "the dump." He did try the Mamoli website for download links with no luck and I did try a request to Model Shipways who are the US suppliers but no answer.
I kid you not that the reason for this abandonment is that his dog ate the kit plans!!! The same thing happened to the sails but he wasn't bothered about those as he had already decided not to hang them, (the sails, not the dog.) He is new to modeling (my friend, not the dog) so I'm trying to help him out. I'm an experienced modeler myself so I'm not bothered about helping him without any instruction book (I'm not familiar with Mini Mamoli kits so I don't know whether the dog got this as well) but copies of any one-for-one plans would be a extremely useful. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The dog is still alive and well, my friends wife made sure of that, but he is a dog lover anyway.... still. Back to top View user's profile Send private message

Well, it could have been worse - the dog could have ate the hull! At least now he has a chance of salvaging something. The dog ate my friend's report card back in grammar school and he was afraid to tell the teacher as he was sure an excuse like that wouldn't be believed. Sorry I can't help out in this case but hope it all turns our well eventually. If nothing else maybe he get the plans from the America from another manufacturer and work with those.

Hi Brian,
If you contacted the parts department at Model Expo, then the plans will probably just show up in the mail without warning. I've contacted them twice over the past year or so. Both times, they never replied to me, but the parts just showed up one day. Clare |

Thanks for the input Richard and Clare.
I did indeed E-mail Model Expo parts dept. and almost as an afterthought included my mailing address... I will keep my fingers crossed. If they do turn up I will let you know and meanwhile I am keeping an eye open for plans for other versions. My main interest is simple deck layout and rigging and I could always try using a scale changer if necessary. Thanks again for taking the time to post.

Brain:
In process of making Mamoli's America and have plans and their directions. Unfortunately, currently in Florida until April and plans are in Michigan. Would be happy to share them, I'm not sure of the exact kit number but it is the larger one. Let me know in April if you still need them. Bridgman Bob |

Hi Bob.
Many thanks for the offer but it sounds like your kit is a full sized one and mine is the little one with the solid hull. These are the specs. for mine. "Length 8-1/4" / Height 10" / Scale 1:193" Fingers crossed I may have come up with a workaround as I've just picked up on eBay an old Scientific Models kit version of the America which is complete with the plans. The scale is quite different going by the size of the finished model but all I'm looking for is some help with the deck layout and the rigging. Thanks again for taking the time to post and for the offer. PS. Forgive me for picking up on the name typo. but it gave me a chuckle and a strong memory of a nickname I acquired a long time ago. Many, many moons ago I was in "Employee Mode" back in England in the '60/70's and I got involved in these new fangled machines called computers and spent quite a lot of my time walking around muttering curses with a slide rule tucked into my top pocket... this was before the days of small hand held calculators. I wasn't senior enough to have my own secretary so had to share a pool of them with other managers who used plain English rather than my "techno-babble" as they all called it. It led to the secretaries naming me "Brains" after a boffin / scientist character from an animated TV program all the rage at the time called "Thunderbirds Are Go." I took it as quite a compliment, thinking of some of the names I got called sometimes!! PPS. I could do with being in Florida at the moment! Here in Nova Scotia we just survived two back to back snowstorms over two days and we have 2 feet of snow outside.

Hi Brains
Can I call you that? I used to love that show. Supermarionation was kind of weird yet really cool... Anyway, the scientific models plans should work fine for the details you're looking for. Of course you'll have to scale a little bit. Or, just find a copier to reduce the plans a little to save yourself some work. So, are you going to build the Scientific kit too? Clare |

Hi Clare. Yeah, use it by all means. ((-: I've answered to many names in my time and if it catches on I'll change my profile!!
Actually I did pick up a "backup" nickname of Joe-90, again after a TV show (this one American, I think) because of the special "bionic" glasses I started to wear around that time. I have always had a worsening hearing problem and the time came to wear a hearing aid built into the glasses I've worn all my life. That's another story and the first one I got paid a decent sum for when I finally put it down on "paper"... wow, was that really 10 years ago?? http://www.folksonline.com/folks/ts/1999/hearing.htm Yes I certainly do plan on finishing this one as well. In fact, looking under my modeling table beside my computer desk here I see quite a backlog. AL Red Dragon Junk, Bluenose (small one,) Sterling Models Cutty Sark, Scientific Models Cutty Sark, Flying Cloud, Eagle, Robt. E Lee's (2,) MS Phantom, Mini Mamoli America and Scientific America now on it's way. There is also a 1:12 plastic Monogram '67 Corvette kit that somebody else started but I shouldn't talk about that one here!. With the exception of the Red Dragon, they are all solid hulls (which I usually plank anyway) and these are my specialty now as my hands are gradually becoming more stiff with arthritis and coping with built up hulls is becoming too much hard work. Most of them have come via eBay where the ones that have been started but abandoned tend to be bargains even with the shipping charges. The Junk has been on my wish list for a long time because she's that much different and most important, no ratlines!! She does have a plank-on-frame hull but it looks to be quite a simple one. I exceeded my display space allocation many, many years ago so all of these will be donated to local charities, foodbanks and other worthy causes for fundraising purposes when finished... my pleasure has always been in the building. The only one my wife Dee took a real liking to is the only one that has stayed home since I build her 20 years ago. She's the AL King of the Mississippi Riverboat (the original version with the twin boarding planks)... she was the first all wood / brass model I ever built and I swear to this day that my gray hair comes from the 6 months I spent just getting the railings right. This was before I had any proper modeling tools, certainly power ones, and I was masochistic enough to follow her with the full sized AL J. S. Elcano. However I managed to make rather a good job of her and she's the only one I ever sold for a respectable price to a private collector in Ontario. If I have a favourite manufacturer it is AL, their plans and instructions, certainly the early ones, were something of a joke but they are a lot better now and AL has always been generous with their material... I embellish nearly all of my models now using mostly leftover wood from AL kits. Thank heavens they are laser cutting their sheets now, that saves me having to use my scroll saw to rough cut them... that tool got banished to my unheated woodworking workshop the first time I used it indoors because of the noise it makes. I have done all their cannons and their Wells Fargo Stagecoach. I also have a Wrebbit 1:8 Mercedes - Benz 1930's open tourer (100% all hardwood) that I finished last winter and that will leave home one day...but again I shouldn't talk about them here. The only kit remaining on my wish list is the Constructo Elidir (now renamed Louise) but every outlet on the planet seems to have that one on backorder. I have a softspot as well for steamboats / riverboats and the Elidir is a Thames river steamboat... I used to see quite a few of them cruising the river in my youth. I also have half an eye on the MS Harriet Lane side wheeler. I seem to have taken the long way round Clare to answer your question but I have always enjoyed talking modeling shop, my hearing is almost non existent nowadays and I can't use the phone any more. PS. Thanks for the copier tip, I didn't think of that. I have a 3in1 printer/copier/fax here that will do the job nicely.

Well, I don't remember anything about Joe-90, so "Brains" it is!
You know, the funny thing is that the Thunderbirds mention really must have triggered some part of my own brain afterwards. Last night, I clearly recall having a dream. It was quite vivid and included Thunderbird #2 loading up and taking off. I recall it well because I remember saying to myself "oh, yea, I guess it prepares for flight automatically before the pilots come on board" and wondering to myself if they have time to really check the craft over before launch – they never did in the show Well, I think you've found the perfect place to talk shop here. Yeah, display and workshop space is always an issue. I still have display room since my projects are very long-term and I work on more than one at a time. If I finish my three main projects in the next 6 months (one should be done in less than 2 weeks), I'll need more display options. Do you have any pics of your projects? You should post them if you do. As for solid hull kits, I've developed quite a fondness for them myself. My own H.M.S. Fair Rosamond is based on a kit's solid hull which I planked over. That the first I've used that method on. Oh, and yesterday I was digging around and forgotten I'd picked up an old America solid hull kit off of Ebay. I don't think I'll be getting to it any time soon. So if the Scientific kit doesn't work out for you and you still need them, you're welcome to borrow the plans from it. They're 1/8" scale, but you can reduce them as needed. Clare ![]() |

I didn't really follow the Joe-90 program and my only recollection is a very young pre-teen boy who turned into "Superkid" as soon as he put on a special pair of glasses... didn't do a lot for me! "Brains" on the other hand always appealed to my warped sense of humour... my only reason for carrying a sliderule was because I have always been hopeless at math. I have a mental block for anything beyond arithmetic. )-:
I don't know whether you ever tripped over it but a live-action movie version of Thunderbirds was released in '04... it's been on cable up here a couple of times. Quite a faithful reproduction but it didn't really seem the same. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/thunderbirds/ Thanks for the offer to loan me your plans... lets see how I get on with what's coming and I'll certainly take you up on it if need be. I've never quite got into the habit of working on models in parallel as I tend to get a bit bored with one towards the end and it's the thought of starting something new that truly motivates me to complete it. I certainly aim to get some photos uploaded before long as I have a friend who has offered to handle dispersal of what finished models I have accumulated so far among our local organisations. It's getting more difficult for me to handle that side of things with my deafness... for particular reasons I can't wear most types of aids any longer. Also, my wife Dee still works full time running her very busy website. Having promised him a complete set of photos of what he will be placing I'm ashamed of the few that already exist. Within the next two weeks I MUST create a new library and I'll upload the ship ones. C-ya Brian
