Default Thinking of deviating from the instructionsam I insane?

Hello,

I am a newbie working on the Artesania Latina American Schooner (1819). I am currently attaching the rough (first) hull planking. The instructions have me attaching the bulwarks and finished hull planks before attaching the keel, stern post, and stem.

This is my first model, so I may be completely wrong here, but it seems to me that the only way to get a good tight fit between the ends of the hull planking and the keel, stern post, and stem is to ignore the instructions and attach these pieces (keel, stern post and stem) first.

Will I go on the regret this flagrant "mutiny" against the instructions? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thank you,
Brett

Welcome to the forum Brett,
I've only built a couple of POB's but it seems to me that the stem (especially) needs to be in place before planking the hull, otherwise it will be a tough fit up afterwards. There are many more experienced members that will give you better advice. However, it's nice to have you aboard.

I am on my first build also "Artesania Latina Bluenose II" the hull is very similar except for the front end. I just started planking and will have the same problem. The false keel measures .245 inch thick, add two layers of planking to this on both sides you end up with .387". The keel parts supplied measure .222" thich. I would say don't put the first layer of planking on the false keel, only on the frames then sand down the false keel to achieve the same thickness as the keel supplied. Keep in mind the thickness of the finish planking. Advice at this point would be most welcome. Thanks

Thank you all for the input and the link!

I think I am going to proceed with my plan to attach the keel, stern post and stem before the finished planking! I am glad at least I'm not the only person (Dennis) to fret over the fit and finish of the planks without these pieces in place to guide me on the angles! I know I've already made a terrible mess of the rough planks by trying to eyeball it.

I definitely also agree with Claude that the planking shouldn't cover the false keel and that it'll be a matter of sanding to fit.

I expect to be done with the rough planking by tonight, and will probably have committed my "mutiny" by tomorrow morning. When it's all said and done, I'll try to post a photo to help you make your decisions (perhaps by example of how not to proceed :) )!

Cheers,
Brett
