Default Ironclad Junkie

My name is Glen and my major interest is American Civil War ironclads, both Union and Confederate. I scratch built in large (1/32 - 1/16) scale.

Glen,
There are usually several ironclads on Ebay. Search under ship model kits.
Welcome aboard.

GLEN,
The Mariner's Museum, Newport News, has some great exhibits on ironclads. I was very impressed with their model of the USS Merrimack ... as a saiing vessel with steam assist. and, then, on the same scale, a model of the CSS Virginia.
Two things really stood out for me: On the Merrimack I noticed a "gadget" around the prop shaft and when i inquired was told that it was a blade feathering mechanism ... never suspected that they were THAT developed back then! And the Virginia revealed to me that the fore and aft ends of the "Merrimack" hull were cut down, decked over and waterproofed ... and those areas of the hull became SUBMERGED to protect against gunfire! Again, a surprise for me.
Welcome to the group ... I'm nearby in Fairfax County.
BILL
