Default Fair American

Has anyone out there tried the Fair American kit from Model Shipways? I purchased the kit with the hope that I could turn it into a reasonable version of the HMS Sophie from the Patrick O'Brien book Master and Commander. Am I way off base here? I'm new at the hobby but have a lot of patience. I'd appreciate any reviews of this kit from fellow modelers.

Joseph : I am in the process of building the FA from MS. I bought it on eBay and it is an older kit. The instructions are dated 1988.
The main issue with MS is that from what I've read on the forums, an MS kit is an intro into Scratch building. Since you must make most of the deck furniture yourself. e.g. The rigging instructions for the cannons say there are 48 (not sure of the number) blocks requred and ARE NOT furnished.
I have found the instructions extremely hard to follow so I went looking for a "build log" on all the forums. To no avail. Only logs are for the Lauck Street model. I have used them for some guidence however.
So, I have been plugging along and am hopeful I'll end up with a reasonale model when done.
Your desire to convert it to the Sophie intriques me too. I'd like to see how you do. My email is and I'd appreciate some photos of the conversion effort. Be glad to share some photos of my efforts with you as well.
Tom
