Hopefully the fourth time is the charm.
My three previous attempts at planking my Mantua's 1:98 HMS Victory were abject failures. All of the failures can be attributed to my inexperence in wood modeling. I am using the 3 articles on planking by[RG]CC++ (?), found in the FAQ section as the basis of getting it right this time (hopefully). Before I get too far along, I am hoping for additional insight to confirm that this latest attempt is in fact the proper way to plank this particular model. I have installed the initial deck and garboard planks as mentioned in the article. I have also found the mid-point on all bulkheads and have installed and matched these two planks as well. The different plank width's at each bulkhead has also been calculated, and I am ready to become a sanding fool with the installation of the remaining planks. But the model ship shown in the article is not identified and does not have an exposed keel that my Mantua model does. I may be wrong, but the ship shown in the articles appears to be a commercial ship rather than a military ship. Or could this difference in keels be solely attributable to being from different kit manufacturers? This difference between my model and the article's model has led to the first deviation between how I am planking and how I am told to plank. The garboard planks I installed, after a more than adequate soak, were curved and warped to match the bulkheads insomuch as the planking material (lime wood) allowed. These planks were also tapered on the underside, but only to the point that they were able to be matched to the keel. But where the article's garboard planks, as shown in the photographs, run from bow to stern, my garboard planks fall short of both the bow and stern by one and two bulkhead respectively. I have attributed this soley to the fact that the Victory's bulkhead profiles rise much more sharply towards the bow and stern than the article's model. Am I wrong here? Should these garboard planks run all the way from bow to stern irregardless of the model? Second question. Should I continue to add full width planks from the keel until the planks reach both the bow and the stern, and only then begin the plank tapering mentioned in the article after bulkhead plank widths have been recalculated? Or should I start the immeadiate tapering of the planks? Many thanks. Mike |

Mike:
Your garboard strake is a special "one of a kind" plank that should run the full length of the hull, bow to stern; It will be wider than the rest of your planks. You should be tapering planks based on lengths along the individual bulkheads. Some planks can run untapered if the lengths of the bulkheads are the same. The use of battens (small diameter lengths of wood) to separate your area to be planked into more manageable areas that are multiples of full width planks (I use 5 plank widths) will help in the planking process. I saw this question late (hence, the late reply).
