Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Default A new sailor

In the winter of 2000 I got bored and decided to do something different with my time and money...so I decided to take up model ship building.

When I opened the box and started to get going, I couldn't believe how MONEY and time would be involved (typical newbie sentiment).

I shelved the project in 2001, after failing to properly install the first layer of planking for a third time. By that time the emphasis of my thoughts had been reversed. l couldn't believe how much TIME and money were involved. I didn't expect the project to be easy...I just didn't think it would be that hard or difficult.

Anyway, hello folks. I am looking forward to talking with you as well as picking your brains as the time and/or need arises.

Mike

Mike,

There is a lot of time involved and a certain amount of funds if you do not have the tools. Several shipwrights here on the forum have made their own tools for specific task. Browse around and you will be back on course in no time, by the way ship building it isn't a race so take your time.

Hi Michael.
Do I agree with you!! I "shelved" a kit of the Pandora for a few years because I just could not get the hang of planking. So frustrating. However, I have now completed that kit and am on the Endevour, which I find, with lots of practice, to be coming together OK. There is no doubt about it, there is no substitute for experience, which of course, you cannot get without doing it! As to the cost; yes, it can be a bit of a bind especially when your enthusiasm runs away with you and you start buying tools you may never use. Another expensive learning experience!. Good luck and keep at it. Jonathan.
