Gary:
What part of the capstan are you referring to when you say "capstan blocks"? I can't find the term anywhere.

Those are called capstan bars, I think.

According to Goodwin's The Construction and Fitting of the English Man of War 1650-1850, the capstan bars were each 1/3 the extreme breadth of the vessel in length. He says they were about 3 1/2"-4 1/2" in width. He makes no mention of their stowage and neither did Lavery in his Arming and Fitting book.

I believe John Harland recently published something on capstans and windlasses. I may be wrong about that, but I think I saw that listed somewhere.

Here it is, as I suspected. Just scroll down their list to find it.

I have not seen this book yet, but I know the man's work. Mr. Harland is a very experienced researcher and I would bet this book would very thorough.

Gary,
In Charles Davis book The Ship Model Builders Assistant he shows several illustrations and discusses the storage location of the capstan bars. If you don't have this book let me know and I'll makes some scans and post them in this thread.

Gary:
Look in the NRG publication Ship Modeler's Shopnotes and there is a nice article in there giving the proportions for carriages to fit each size of cannon from 3 pounders up to 42 pounders. This was taken from an 18th century treatise on the subject. I have used this source to draw carriages in CAD and it works very well.
