I have been doing a lot of research on gun carriages and have found several rules for various parts of the gun carriage in relation to the size of the cannon ball. Such as found in Charles Davies books The Built Up Ship Model and Model Builders Assistant, Milton Roths Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern and Historic Ship Models by Mondfeld and several online books dealing with Naval gun carriages.
I am looking for dimensions of a 6# gun carriage. The only dimensions I can say with some certainty based on all the above references is the thickness of the brackets and various bolts. In the book Ship Modeling from Scratch by Edwin Leaf, there are shown some dimensions for a 4# and a 9# gun carriage on pg.153. Would it be ok do you think to proportionately scale between these dimensions to obtain those of a 6# gun carriage? Or, does anyone have the dimensions for certain gun carriages? ![]()

Hi Don --
I have most of ther books you mention , and also could not find any info on deminsions for a #6 , however , I do not see the problem using the scaled deminsions from a #4 to a #9 as you suggest . I assume you are referring to marine (ship) gun carriges and not land based (fort) carriges , as they are different in design . HOLD FAST !

Thanks Gary. Yes I was referring to ship cannons. Those supplied with my kit aren't very accurate and so I want to build my own or salvage the pieces I have and thus the need for the dimensions.

You might find this amusing. This is the output from a spread sheet I built a bit ago to answer a question about the diameter of shot based on the pound weight. It doesn't format well for this system and I can't post the actual Excel file. If you'd like to fool around with it a bit, drop me a PM and I can send it your way.
Jim Scale 1/67 0.014925373 The numbers below are: Weight of shot in pounds - Diameter Feet - Dia. Inches - Scale inches - Scale mm 6 - 0.013 - 3.53 - 0.05 - 1.33 9 - 0.020 - 4.04 - 0.06 - 1.53 12 - 0.026 - 4.44 - 0.06 - 1.68 32 - 0.071 - 6.16 - 0.09 - 2.33 Assumptions Based on the formula Vol. of a sphere = (4 * p1 * radius cubed) / 3 or for a given volumn, the radius will equal rad = cube root ((3 * volumn) / 4 pi)) Pounds of iron / cubic foot 450 |

Don:
Your idea of "scaling between" sounds reasonable to me. At the scales we work with for modeling, it would not be noticed to any but the expert judge's eye.

Thanks guys. I think you're right with regards to the scale. I will try and salvage the pieces that came with the kit. The brackets aren't that far off that I couldn't tweak them into shape. I guess I need to decide whether I want a one piece bed or no bed.

Gary
At the moment I haven't done anything with them except for one which I posted back in February (open in a blank window) Since then I have been adding all of my deck fittings and now I am turning my attention back to my cannons. I want to create a little more accurate representation then what is shown in that post. This is why I was doing more research into the construction of the carriage. I am not particularly fond of the brass wheels or how wide the bed is in relation to the cannon. There is also no transom piece in the front or quion. Having researched as much as I have I believe the kit manufacture was trying to make them look like Continental gun carriage like that shown in Historic Ship Models, pg.167 by Mondfeld.
