Default Phantom 6999 credit and thoughts

Ahoy,

I'm a few days from completing my Phantom. I have enjoyed it a GREAT DEAL and looking forward to my next project. I am happy with my finished ship but see so many areas were I could have done a better job. Yet proud of my first try at wooden ships.

To get the merchandise credit I need to: send 4 photos of model (4 sides) and write a letter giving necessary information. Should this be sent to someone's attention? Any special info need? Anyone have experience with the time frame?

Project 2: Thinking of building a second Phantom from scratch ( 90% ) but at 3/16" scale(solid hull). Does anyone have thoughts on problems which could occur with enlarging the 1/8" scale plans by 1.5 (measure off plans and multiply by 1.5). Please know that I am not a purest and would rather my models to look good than be 100% accurate.

Project 2.1: Considering using my credit for the HMS BOUNTY LAUNCH. Down loaded the plans and looks like a boat I would like to build. I want a lesson in planking and this looks like it will teach it. Thoughts????????????

I am a novist and would appreciate any comments from anyone. Great to hear tips from more exerienced modelers, but good to hear from newbees like me.

Dave

Dave - do not get hung up with kits and worrying about your skill level -- build what you like ! - have fun and enjoy the voyage . There are too many people in this forum who think they are experts and have it all figured out . Pick builds YOU are interested in . Do not let your self be influenced by so called "experienced builders" - just have fun with it !

Dave: I have just finished Phantom and sent off my four photos together with the original invoice. I think that's all the information you need, but there are others on this or other forums who have gone through the claims process. You are allowed 6 months. Look on the Model Expo web page for an address.

Dave:
I took the four photo's and gave them to my local hobby shop where I bought the kit and the salesman sent in the photo's and claim and gave me the credit then.

As Gary says build what you want to. Is the Bounty launch a MS kit? The refund applies to MS products only. I would suggest you find a MS kit for future build and put it on "lay away" (that's what I did with USS Constitution).

Dave I've done that several times. I like to build scratch models of Chesapeake Bay work boats. I get the plans from museums, and usually adjust them to 1/2" = 1'; (1:24). Works for me! Be careful though, if your plans are copywrited, commercial copy folks cannot reduce/enlarge them.

Hi Dave,

Congrats on finishing your first model. I too just finished my first model, MS Bluenose. I loved it and am also prould of how it turned out. And I learned a LOT. Some things I would do differently next time.

I'm impressed with the fact that you are considering a scratch build. I'm nowhere close to that illustrious goal. I'm just starting MS Constitution. An advanced kit, but a kit none the less.

I agree with the gentleman that suggested work on the piece you love and not so hung up on the kit or scratch build comparison. I thought of the Bounty myself because, I must admit, I love the movies:) However, the Constitution edged it out. I love that period ...and I'm just anal enough to deal with 400 yards of rigging.:) Plus I really like Model Shipways kits. Great detail plans and instructions. I hope one day they will create a large scaile Ships of the Line...hint hint.

Anyways, just an opinion from a relative newcomer to this addiction...did I say addiction? I meant hobby:)

Enjoy,

Tom

Dave,

Congrats on finishing Phantom!
Scratch building is not as hard as it looks. I messed up the solid hull on my Sultana and wound up scratch building the hull. It took time, and I had to figure some things out, but with the help of the people on the forums, it came out looking great. I was able to develop the shape of the bulkheads right from the plans. I just scanned them into the computer with a scanner and used Power Point (part of Microsoft Office) to make the drawings. You could easily re-size your Phantom plans with Power Point as well.

I just finished up the Bounty Launch, and yes it is a Model Shipways kit, just like the Phantom.

For a good planking experience, it definitely fits the bill. All the planks are laser cut already, so just occasionally trimming is needed on them. If you like it, I say go for it. If you have the winter sale flier, I think they extended the dates a bit and it may still be $69.99 :-) The sale code for it was W351
