Corel Wasa OR Segral Wasa kit ?
Hello to all -- Corel Wasa OR Segral Wasa kit ? Which is more accurate , which is a better build ? Which supplies the best plans/material/fittings/etc.?

Hello Gary,im probably a bit bias but,the Mantua Sergal is a pretty nice kit albeit a bit pricey.Take a look at Eric's Vasa,he is much farther along with his build. http://www.pbase.com/diversion/vasa The kit is 1:60 scale.The finished kit end up being 46 1/2 inches long,so you would need to have some pretty good space.My display case will be 49"Lx38"Hx18"W .All in all the kit is very nice.The wood in the kit is of excellent quallity.The 1:1 plans are very good as are the rigging and sail plans.I think that the instruction booklet is pretty good too.The plans themselves do most of the explaining.The cannons and scuptures are bronze castings,casted from wax molds.I did have some problems with 14 of the lions head masks for the cannon port lids.They were not very good,But Mantua/Sergal sent me replacements with no problems.Their customer sevice was great.They took about two weeks to arrive from Italy to the US.David Teal has built Corels version of the Vasa http://modelshipworld.com/phpBB2/mo...=view_album.php .I would PM him about the kit.Im sure that he will tell you about the quality of Corel kit.Cheers Walter

hi Walter - i spoke to the gentleman in charge of the Wasa Museum , he suggested I buy a set of plans from the musem . did you buy a set ?

Gary..... I may be biased too, but the Mantua Vasa is great - although it is quite large if you have a limited display space.
I visited the Vasa Museum 2 years ago; that was part of the impetus for me to build this ship. I didn't pick up the plans, but I did pick up a lot of reference materials. Neither Corel nor Mantua are going to be perfectly accurate historically, but it would take an expert on that ship to know the difference. If you are concerned about historical accuracy - scratch may be the only way to go. I seriously doubt you will ever show your ship to someone who will say "hey.... the real ship isn't like that, it's supposed to be.......". There are a lot of defects in the original ship's construction that I doubt you would want to include in a model. I don't know what good the plans from the museum would do, other than as a reference. If you buy the Mantua kit, the plans provided are quite good. Good luck, whatever you decide to do! Regards.

Gary/John.... Corel's Wasa kit would have to be much improved over their Victory kit if what you say is true. I could not imagine a poorer quality in the writing of their instructions.
Could write a book about other design flaws (will not bore you with the details). Just not a real happy Corel camper here. I will, however, give them credit for their excellent raw material.

Ok,now you have me thinking..........What ever Wasa kit that you choose,alot of research and studying will be necessary.Most kits often fall into a problem of being inaccurate so be prepared to do alot of kit bashing.From speaking to other modelers the Billing Boat's Wasa is most correct in the hull shape.The plans from the museum are pretty accurate and are worth the cost as Eric has said for a good reference.One of the best sources of info about the Wasa,is the new five book series being put out by the Wasa museum. It will be composed of 5 books, 300 to 500 pages in length.The first volume is titled : "Vasa I : The Archaeology Of A Swedish Warship Of 1628".This volume is mainly about the wreck and the salvage.Carl Olof Cederlund, one of the salvors, is the principal author.Fred Hocker, director of research at Vasamuseet, is series editor
The rest is being prepared will be edited as time passes by.It is a great and beautiful work!Another very good book is The Power and The Glory by author Hanns Soop.A very good reference for the ships sculptures and to where they are located on the ship.I was searching the other day for photos of Corel's Wasa and came up with a few different views of the stern.They must have improved on thier version of the ship by adding the correct amount of sculptures.Another thing that I would like to point out with the Corel kit is the forward rail bullisters.They use some kind of fish type creatures.....pretty strainge.The Corel kit is much more accurate in the beakhead's curveture compared to the Mantua kit.I am also posting one of Clayton's photos of his scratch built Wasa stern shots for comparison.Cheers Walter
