Model Expo has just posted a new kit on their website from the Model Shipways line!
Mayflower Congrats to our very own Chuck Passaro! You may have seen Chuck's updates this year on his scratch-build of the Mayflower. It turns out his mystery client was in fact Model Shipways, and the model was the prototype for their new kit based on his design. The kit will be solid-hull based, and is listed as entry-level difficulty. As departure from their standard kit instructions, his detailed building instructions (similar to the practica he developed for Phantom and Sultana to supplement their kit-supplied instructions) are the standard instructions for the Mayflower kit. Hopefully this begins a new era of detailed instructions for Model Shipways entry-level kits. The website indicates the kit will be available in December (I guess not many families give Thanksgiving presents, so no real point in making it available for the appropriate holiday ) but the instructions are available for download now. Check it out!

Thanks Ben for announcing the kit. I am very excited about. The instructions are printed in B&W however I was able to post many full color photos on this forum of my progress. An even more detailed log of th eentire build can be found on MSW. Should anyone wish to build her I am sure you will have fun doing so. I sure did. Please be sure to contact me if you do. There is so much that can be done with the kit but I had to stop somewhere. I hope it is well recieved and reviewed. Chuck |

It was just pointed out to me that they have also announced a solid hulled kit for America as well. Entry level...looks quite similar to the Phantom kit, actually.

Congrats Chuck! She looks great! You know, I think I still like the B & W over the color pictures...
She should provide the novice builder (or anyone for that matter) with many enjoyable hours of building. It was fun just watching you build it in front of our eyes. ![]()

Thank you guys. I really appreciate the kind words and support.
I am hoping to do the same with Syren. Maybe they will want to reproduce it as well. I am building it with the idea that they might want to. Heres an update on that. Sorry it might be off topic but I just finished the rudder. Chuck |

Nice job Chuck! When to copper the hull or not? What determines this?

Thank You. I am not sure I follow your question. Are you referring to what period in history or when during the building process??
I would venture that it is pretty safe to assume any naval ship after the revolutionary war that was somewhat large should be plated with copper. At least anything larger than 65-75 feet long along perpindiculars. They have records of the Syren being plated so that made it very easy. So was the Argus which was similar and built at the same time. This ship is 94 feet between perps. Thanks again for the kind words. Its on to the fun stuff now. All of the carved work and oatboard details. Chuck |
