Default Kit Bashing

New poll: Am curious as to how frequently "Kit bashing" is done.

Do you use the term "kit bashing" in a negative or positive way? In other words do I hurt the models authenticity by replacing parts that are not original or, by using materials outside the kit, do I improve it's look?

I guess it depends on the extent of kitbashing needed. Some kits require a lot of modification to bring them to the state of authenticity that one wants, and others do not. Then there is the case of using some of a kit's materials to build an entirely different model. At one time or another I have done both.

Pete: Not negative in any way. I use it as a term to indicate that the basic kit was changed in any way (better materials, added detail) as opposed to building the kit as is from the box and according to the manufacturer's plans. Another way to put it would be a "change in plans".
It's my belief that rarely is a kit model built without the modeler making changes from the original plans.
I'm curious to see how often this is done.

While I am new to ship modeling, I have been a figure modeler for several years. I frequently practice kit bashing for several reasons. Often, the kit is not accurate-- I always do at least some research when building. Sometimes(especially with figures) I can see ways to improve the presentation by changing things about the model-- the pose, the groundwork, etc. With ships, often the included parts are different from the drawings, way out of scale, or simply of poor quality. I have a kit of the HMS Beagle that bears little resemblance to the Beagle described in the Anatomy of the Ship series. Needless to say, it will be heavily kit-bashed when I build it.

That's what I figured you meant. I just wanted to make it clear.

I always use a kit just as the basis of the model I am building as all the RNLI lifeboats in any class are different in detail as they have refits/repairs at different times over their 25 year service life. In many cases if I build a lifeboat as it was in say 1990 then buld it again as it was in 2000 and again as today then I would have three very different looking models from one basic set of parts.

I have never built a model from the plans -- never ! - I use the plans to get the general layout and some idea of how the manufacturer wants the model to be built , than I build it the way I want to , adding or subtracting from the kit to suit what I want .
