I have looked throug all the threads in the forum by doing a search for display cases and our own forum links section. I just can't beleive how much they want for a display case.
Does anyone have any idea if the make a kit for display cases? Or does anyone have any plans for a display case? Thanks

If all you're looking for is functionality you can make them out of plexiglass, furring strips and quarter inch plywood. I made a couple for my biggest boats. Although they really arn't very pretty, they do keep the dust off, and the cats out.

Don.
I have some good news and some bad news. I am just finishing up a case for my Newsboy. It is about 36" x 16" x 24". Since I have a goodly supply of walnut that's what I used I did not keep track of the amount of lumber I used so I'll have to guess in order to get a price. O.K. I figured that I used approx 6 bd. ft. of lumber. now this was in the rough and I'm guessing that the price of that would be about $5.00/bd.ft. so there is $30.00, The base was a layer of 3/4" plywood say $15.00 with a layer of 1/4" walnut glued on top. That was $36.00 Both of these were cut from a 2' x 4' Panel). Using Birch for your would would be somewhat cheaper The glass (I have not heard good things about plexiglas or for that matter the other polycarbonate material) cost me $50.00 I have not been able to figure out how to get pictures onto this site so if you send me your email address I'll send you a picture of the almost finished case. One light of glass has to be installed after I do a couple of finishing touches on the ship. That was the good news, the bad news is that I got the instructions (No plans) from a web site. I plugged in the web address and got nothing. I'll give you the address that I have and see if you can make anything of it. http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/dave.webber/davewebber.html Regarding my comments on the use of plexiglas. I don't want to start WW-3 and I can't defend what I said but it is exactly that "I have not heard" with the emphasis on Heard Any question, drop me a line Fred |

Thanks guys. Fred the web address looks fine, it just doesn't go anywhere. I tried a couple of times.
I already got plexiglass from Ace hardware. My local glass company closed up shop, so I'll give the plexiglass a try. My dimensions will be about 29 x 11 x 12. There sort of odd numbers so I may even them up a bit.

Don,
I know I've seen a few different how-to guides for building cases. Here's the one from MSW: link here . I'll see if I can find the others I've seen. I need to find them anyway, as I'm finishing up my current model right now, and will build a case for it, and my previous model as well. Having worked at an Ace as a high-schooler, I'm suprised yours sells only plexiglass. I've never been in an Ace that sold plexiglass, but not real glass. But plexi should be no problem...it's easier to work with anyway and will yield a lighter case.
