best HMS BOUNTY kit ?
Hello all - What is the best (most accurate) BOUNTY kit available ? I am planning to build the BOUNTY for my next project .

I don't know which is the best, but right now I'm working on the Constructo Bounty. It's a 1:50 scale. I'm just now finishing the masts and spars and am getting ready to start on the sails. I'm not too good at posting pictures, but as soon as i figure it out I will.............

Jotika kits seem to follow the Anatomy of the Ship series quite closely, and their kit of the Bounty cannot be a bad choice. And Jotika tends to more or less adjust their price to the competition for similar subjects. Have a look at their site.
But of course if you want a cutaway of the ship, Artesania is the kit to choose.

I am working on the AL Bounty (open hull) at the moment, and I have the AOTS: Bounty book. Here are some random thoughts:
The accuracy is "okay". - The mizzenmast has a topsail. AOTS:Bounty shows no topsail. You can easily omit this however. - The figurehead is wrong. AL includes a woman as a figurehead. AOTS:Bounty shows a well dressed man with a hat. - The rear transom carving - you just get a featureless photoetched sheet of brass. I painted mine so that it looks more like the real ship. The instructions are "poor". Actually the instructions are pretty decent up to the fittings of the hull. The rigging instructions are non-existent and absolutely dismal. You are provided with a single large sheet of paper with ALL the rigging in place, making it almost impossible to see where the lines come from and where they go. The instruction manual says: "From here on completion of the model is simply a matter of following the instructions". Thanks a LOT AL! You will need to rely on rigging plans elsewhere. The quality of the parts is "good". The walnut and mahogany samples provided in my kit were simply beautiful. However, the quality of some of the laser cut parts left much to be desired. Some of the parts were pretty mis-shapen which resulted in having to either adjust, or fabricate a whole new part on my own. Some of the fittings look to be out of scale - e.g. the belaying pins and the eyelets are too big. Either make your own or buy. If you build the AL open hull Bounty I recommend you spend PLENTY of time researching, and looking at the work of others. |

hello - i have been getting allot of emails from people who bought AL kits and were generally disappointed with the plans and especially the lack of rigging plans/info . Most were happy with the materials (supplied wood) but not happy with the Lazar cut parts . All in all , the majority of people I have spoken to were disappointed with AL kits . Perhaps , others here will have different views ...................

On page 19 of McKay's book there is a photo of a close up of the figurehead of an earlier replica. It is clearly a woman; the headgear in this case is different. The option also quotes Bligh on the figurehead: "a pretty figurehead of a woman in riding habit"

Hi Garry, I recently finished the AL Bounty kit, and have to agree with Keith on the poor quality or non-existence of the instructions. In fact I'm glad I didn't throw the box lid away, as I had to refer to it time and again when doing the rigging and the stern (no stern or bow plans at all, nor were there any for the interior cabin walls. The photo book supplied went into more detail than neccessary on some things, but only showed 4 photos of rigging - it seemed to me they lost interest around here.
