Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Default Blocks

I think that in every one of my posts I claim that I am getting ready to start the rigging on my HMS Endeavour. Well, I'm still getting ready, and I have another question. I have noticed that the blocks on 18th century ships are close to being cylindrical when viewed from the side. All the pre-shaped blocks that I have found available are closer to being rectangular. So I figured that I'd reshape the rectangular blocks, but this process takes so much material away that they are no longer the right size. What's more, I started by reshaping the blocks that came with the AL kit. Now, I just got in an order of boxwood blocks (Model Shipways), and they are different in width that the AL blocks that I've already stropped. So, my question is: what are the available sources for scale blocks? I'd love to find a ready-made block that is approximately cylindrical in elevation. Do they exist? Any opinions on the idea of just ignoring the whole cylindrical thing, and proceeding with the rectangular blocks. Note the model scale is 1:60. Thanks, John

Default Re: Blocks

A lot of guys swear by the blocks from Warner Woods West. I know I've seen photos of his blocks, and I thought it was on this forum, but I can't find them now.
Here's a link to a thread about blocks that recommends those blocks. There's a posting that was deleted, maybe that's the one that had the photo. thread here (open in a blank window)

If these are the one's I'm thinking of, they are nicely shaped. Not the square blocks you see from pretty much any kit manufacturer.
