Default "A rose by any other name..."

I just happened to check on the forum and saw DropAnchor's pictures, thought I'd take a look at how he did his rigging.

In viewing the pics, the layout of the deck looked real familiar, so I viewed the gallery. Then after seeing the entire ship, I looked at Model Shipways site and checked something.

It seems that the ship I'm working on, the 1775 Independence by AL, is the exact same ship sold by Model Shipways as the 1787 Sultana. The AL one I have is a bit bigger and is a plank on bulkhead kit.

I also paid a few dollars more!

Now, it really doesn't matter to me, but my question is ...

Did AL sell the patterns & stock to MS and they renamed it and repackaged it, or what's the deal here? What ship does this model represent?

By the way Dropanchor, nice job!

VW,
I can't address all of your questions But I don't believe that your guess is correct about MS buying the masters from AL. I believe that Sultana has been in the Model Shipways line since like forever. Also it doesn't make much sense to me In this day of plank on Bulkhead fervor to buy the rights to a kit, reduce it in size and then make a solid hull version to market. I was curious about your premise so I went to the AS site but alas Your model is no longer shown. Then I went to the MS site and there I noticed that with their current version they offer and on line practicum by Chuck Passaro. Maybe he could shed some light on the subject. Let's hear it Chuck.

Thanks, Fred for the input.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear, I'm not accusing anyone of anything. Having been in the manufacturing end of business, I know how products can be slightly changed and remarketed.

Who made what first doesn't really matter to me. I'm just a stickler for precise details and accurate facts, and the fact that two ships that are identical are sold under two different names just gets me. I know many real ships were sold over time and were given different names.

The ship I'm working on was a discontinued item, in fact it was one of the first I bought when I got into this hobby. I got it through a Garrett-Wade catalog.

Anyway, just a point of interest for me!

Thanks to everyone,

V.W. Miller

VW,
I didn't get the idea that there was anything accusatory from your post. My point was, it seemed a bit of a stretch to buy the patterns and stock and then make major revisions to it. I could not see both ships for comparison so I would have chalked it up to coincidence.
Sorry if you thought otherwise.

I did take a look at the model kit Independance. You are correct that the kit is a rip off of the Sultana with some minor historically inaccurate changes. It is not that AL used the MS model and copied it or that they bought any rights to the design. The Sultana has one of the most complete sets of original plans and documentation is plentiful. AL simply used the original lines for the Sultana to create a kit but didnt want to call it the Sultana. They added a bunch of things like the companionway and altered the rig. They seemed to have pulled the name "Independence " out of a hat though. There was ship called the Independence but noone actually knows what it looked like. Other than it being from the same time period. As the Independence this kit is purely conjecture and reconstruction. As the Sultana, well if someone wanted to BASH the kit using the MS plans thety could create a much larger version of the same thing. It could look pretty good. By the way. MS did for a brief time have a larger POB version of the Sultana but it was only available for a short time. I dont know why they discontinued it. This is also true for their kit of the Virginia pilot boat Katy.

Chuck,
I knew you'd have the answer. Very interesting bit of model history. Thanks for the info.
