Default Albatros spanker boom help.

I am working on the Mantua Albatros and have run into a problem.
How is the spanker boom(and the other booms) secured to the masts? Tha plans do not show how this is done. I am not interested in how they are secured but what keeps the boom up. There seem to be no lines attached at the mast end to keep the boom up in place.

If you find out let me know. The best i can tell from my plans is that the boom has a jaw (port and starboard) that captures the mast and a single line through the ends of the jaws that keeps the boom attached. Doesnt seem like a secure attachment, but i suppose the other lines add a tremendous amount of security.

Hope this will help Bill, This is the Pride of BaltimoreII that I did. You cant see the boom jaws, but note the blocks on the upper spar used to raise and lower it. Hope this helps.

Fred

In a fore and aft rig the booms are held (loosely) in place by a line attached to either side of the boom jaws. This parrel has a series of heavy duty wooden beads strung on it to cushion it against the mast and minimize wear. The lower jaw rests on a wooden collar around the mast and the upper jaw has a throat halliard, block system to help raise it. The sail and it's hoops help hold the two booms in place and the upper jaw, being held at an angle when it is raised, exserts a downward and forward thrust against the mast. Because of this, the inside of this upper jaw is often cut at a slight angle where it rests against the mast. Sometimes there is even a boom down-haul to help in lowering it. I have a good photo of the boom and mast detail on the sloop Clearwater and will try to download it later today, though I do seem to have difficulty bringing photos in from Picasa and can't promise anything.

Thanks for the help Richard. A wooden collar around the mast would do it.
Thanks again everyone for the help.
Bill
