As some of you may know, I am nearly finished building the MS Sultana. I have written a practicum for the model. I hope it has been helpful and enjoyable. I am planning my next project which I thought was going to be the Brig Syren. I want to write another practicum that includes all of the templates and plans you would need to build the model from scratch. However, I am guessing that there is not much interest for this ship. At least since I see there has been little response to my earlier posts on some other forums.
Anyway, if you are interested in this project as a first time scratch build please take part in the poll. The other ship which I am considering would be the Frigate Essex. It is a bit more challenging as a first time scratch project than the Syren. It takes a great deal of time to create a set of working plans for public consumption. I want to continue to make a contribution to the hobby but before setting out want to make sure that I choose the best subject matter. Both models would be plank on bulkhead with all figureheads and carved work possibly supplied as castings for those that are interested. I urgently need to hear from folks before I get too far into one of these modeling projects. Thanks to all of you who have expressed their appreciation and comments on the Sultana and Phantom projects. Thanks in advance and please do reply with your thoughts. Chuck Passaro |

For those who might be interested in the Syren, Here is a link to a preliminary drawing I made. It still needs some work and will be adhusted as the project progresses. That is should I decide to build her. I welcome any comments and suggestions. The link will open a PDF file about 1 meg in size.

Hi Chuck,
Sounds like you've been busy. I voted for both but really have several things I'm currently working on. I am with the Senior center modeling group here in Peabody Ma. we teach all comers to build kits, repairs, whatever. But primarily we are trying to get people interested. Our main focus is starting people off with a scratch built "Dory" with all the goodies, then we scratch build a sharpie schooner (see latest issue of ships in scale, [cover]). I am working with people to scratch build an 8 inch long "desk top model" of the 1934 "J" boat "Rainbow". (Have written up a procedure, but it still needs work). Meanwhile I have a Sultana kit that has been sitting waiting for me to complete the rigging. I've lost the Blueprints (lent them out) Do you have anything i could use, left from your recent project? PS I Write the group's newsletter "Scuttlebutt" If you give me your E-Mail, I'll send you the initial issue which shows what we do and gives info. Rich |

Yes, I think I can help you out there. I have a few weeks left on the rigging but when I am finished I would be glad to mail it out to you. Just e-mail me you address at . Have you seen the first 5 chapters of my guide for building the model. I have modified the rigging a little bit as noted on the plans. Chapter six will be finished this weekend and details construction of the masts and standing rigging.
I also taught a class for seniors locally. We built the Phantom. It went well but I am not sure how many people continued with the hobby. I had a great time though. Chuck Passaro |

Chuck - I originally voted for the Essex so I can't vote again but the Syren project looks interesting also.

They are both great projects. I had hoped that one of the two would have been more popular. This way my decision would be easier. There seems to be interest in both of them. I posted the same poll on several forums and the results when reconciled are nearly even.
I will probably start with the Syren in 3/16" scale. Its a smaller project. I plan on making everything available to whomever requests it. I will keep everyone posted on my progress if folks want to see it. I hope people find my practicums useful tools for the price. I really want to contribute to the hobby as I feel it is shrinking in popularity. What a shame. I belong to several clubs with dwindling membership. As older folks pass away there arent any younger ones to fill in the ranks. At least here in the US. I hope i'm wrong. I thank all who voted. I should start building it in about 3 weeks. First of all thank you so much for the Phantom practicum. I was about to go ballistic after I'd purchased the kit and realized that the plans were very LACKING. Your practicum is so clear and detailed it has made building my first kit a pleasure. As for your next project, I don't think I'm equipped for either of them but I am confident that with the experience I'm gaining from the Phantom, I may be able to handle it with a good practicum at my side! I just need to move on to plank on bulkhead (?) hull construction. Thanks again. Mike |

Thank you so much. Some folks say that a solid hull model is no easier than a POB version. Its just different. If you have the fortitude to finish any solid hull kit a POB should be an easy adjustment. The Essex or Syren will be POB ship models. In the meanwhile I am tackling a commission for a Mayflower model. I will start a new topic and show a picture.
