Well, I am beginning to get close to completing another phase. I completed the seats/lockers on the quarter deck. The plans show them as one smooth piece. But it seems to me that if these are also lockers, the tops would be too heavy to lift easily. So I used "artists license" and divided them into 4 pieces. I just used strip wood to imply that there is some kind of separation between the pieces. My pieces might be too wide, but I a not sure if I can narrow them at this point.
It only took me three attempts to get the Buffalo Rails done. (Grrrr) I guess the only items left are the pinrails and channels. The rudder was finished a long time ago, and I will not do the mast partners until after I fashion the masts. The last two pictures give an overall view of the ship with all of the deck furniture loosely fit. (Funny thing about pictures. I never realized how much "junk" I had accumulated during this build.) |

I have moved forward a few steps. I have completed the pin rails and the channels. I have also cut the extra wood away from the keel. I ordered an Amati Keel Klamper that is supposed to arrive on the 25th. That will allow me to get rid of the large home made clamp that is taking up so much space. I will also do a thorough cleaning of the workbench area.

Sorry, I haven;t posted in such a long time. There have been some medical issues in my extended family that have been taking my time. But, my new Keel Klamper came. I got rid of my huge home made clamp and there is now a lot more room to work. I also was able to assemble my Grizzly Hobby Lathe. For $52, this is a lot easier (and a lot more accurate) than building one. It works like a charm. The last pic shows the beginning of my masts. I started with a 1/2 inch square piece. I sanded the octagonal portion using a simple jig, and then turned the rest of the mast using my lathe. I am very satisfied with the result.
Automerged Post: Pretty quick follow up, huh? Now that I have the lower mast made, I was finally able to fashion the mast partners. It was a pretty simple job. The octagonal piece of my masts were intentionally too long. When I trimed them to the proper length, I had a 3/4 inch scrap piece that was the same profile as the mast. I used that scrap as a pattern to cut out the octagonal hole in the partners. Both masts are now self supporting, even at the proper rake. |

Yes, I did. Very nice. I am always jealous of the models that have the naturally dark wood. The Jefferson Davis is all basswood and I was concerned that it would not take a dark color well. If I was not satisfied with the stain, I was going to paint it. But my first choice was stain. I was not quite satisfied with it right after staining, but after 3 months, the stain darkened to a shade that I like.
