Staining shortcut
While I will always prefer to use stain on my models rather than paint, I still find it a chore sometimes to have to open up a bottle or tin and reach for a brush when it's just a small part / area to be covered.
In these cases, and especially where an exact shade match isn't required, I've started using marker type "pens" that are intended for retouching marks or scratches on furniture. What I have found to be particularly useful are three pack (Light, Medium & Dark Brown) "touch Ups"... with the built in felt tip they are very convenient and I find the coverage to be very even, drying to a semi gloss finish.
As a bonus I can pick up these blister packs very cheaply in my local Dollar store.
