I am curious as to how many of you out there have more than one project going at the same time. I personally am working on the Benjamin Latham from MS (mostly rigged, starting the seine boat--a kit in itself), The Granado from Jotika (hull work almost finished, next step is masting and rigging), Victory (Mamoli kit just about ready for planking). In addition I have a HO micro layout with several structures in various stages of completion. It seems I have a very short attention span and frequently need something new to start. I don't expect that I am alone in this regard. I am almost 69 (<4 weeks to go) and sometimes I wonder if I will be around long enough to finish all these projects
I probably shouldn't even mention the stack on unbuilt kits i have. Ron Gove Leeesburg, VA |

Know what you mean, Ron. I have two started now, the Niagara that's ready for the hull painting and the Syren (both from MS) that I just finished the gun port and sweeps framing. I'll turn 65 yo in June and will be retiring at the end of June. With currently three kits waiting to be build, I can see myself starting another one in June.

I've never attempted parallel builds of different models... I think I would find it too confusing.
However, my most recently completed project was simultaneous builds of two Constructo Victorian Steam Launches - Elidir & Louise. It wasn't my intention to do both together, especially because Constructo made some quite significant changes to both the kit, and the instructions, in updating the original Elidir version. What decided me was having to ask Constructo for help with some missing parts for the Elidir kit and, as this version is long out of production, what arrived were Louise replacements. It became far simpler to ignore the Elidir instructions and work entirely from the latest plans. I'm all for the simple life now... I reached the 69 mark three weeks ago. ![]() I've decided all future birthdays are hereby canceled. ![]()

If at first you don't succeed...look in the trash for the instructions!

Hi Ron,
It's sometimes embarrassing to say how many different projects I have that are "in progress". I used to think it was a problem. But, I've completed enough projects to know that I'm capable of completing them. So, now, I try to stress out less on trying to get any one project finished. There is a great feeling of accomplishment when you finish one. But, to me, it's the journey that matters. I usually work on one until I get stuck and need some time away from it to get some perspective on it. That's when I'll start back on one of my other projects. Keeps me making progress, bypassing those debilitating mental blocks. And I just end up enjoying whatever I'm working on and eventually finishing up a project. Like life, where you end up doesn't necessarily matter as much as what you did along the way, and whether or not you enjoyed and are proud of what you did along the way. So, if your happy with your multiple projects, then don't worry about it. If it would make you happier to finish one of them up, then, that's a good time to focus your efforts. Happy ship modeling! Clare P.S. Happy Belated Birthday Brian (Brains)! |

I take my hat off to you if you are succesfully, and sanely, undertaking more than one model simultaneously! Up until recent years I felt I could undertake ONLY one "project" at a time, whatever it might entail. However, my current boat model project has far exceeded the time that I had envisioned for it and, of necessity, other "home" projects have come into play simutaneously and now I have about four "high-priority" things going at once! Just one boat project though, scratch-built, but I'm making several copies simultaneously of her!
I'm just a youngster at 75 and still learning! BILL |

I am enjoying the replies to my "multiple build" post. To answer some of the comments, I don't get confused on the multiple projects but I do end up losing parts from time to time because of a lack of good organizational skills. Thanks to Model Expo, it hasn't been a real issue. I don't feel bad about the multiple projects going on although I do sometimes wish I'd just get one finished, but that's really so I can start a new one. hehehe.

Hi Ron. The only problem I can see in doing two models at once is space. I think you may need a seperate bench to keep all the bits apart. As it is I still suffer from the "lost parts syndrome" where you are sure you had it a moment ago but it has disappeared. I did not used to believe in gremlins but I am begining to wonder!! You are a brave man. Good luck. Jonathan.

Ha! A kindred spirit. I am 67, retired and my ongoing projects include Fair Rosamond - masting/rigging; USS Kearsarge - resto project; Sterling Fokker D-7 - electro fly/RC – fuselage, Antique 56 in. WS glider - fuselage, Brodak ˝A Baby Flite Streak U Control - engine mount, downstairs bathroom base board moldings – just two pieces left and the whole house will be done. I just can’t find the motivation to finish it, although my wife is doing a good job of providing it.
This has reached the disease stage. I call it “serial project starter”. (SPS for short) .I found something out though; a profound scientific study was conducted that revealed that 100% of the human population will die. In response to this depressing and admittedly frightening revelation, I have concocted a bizarre but plausible theory: If I never finish anything I can’t die because I’m not finished. In other words, if the good Lord calls me and says “Bob, it’s time,” I’ll say “but Lord, I’m not finished with all this stuff,” and he will say “OK, you can have a few more years.” Before you write me off as a wacko, you should know that there is some Biblical basis for my theory. Noah lived for 950 years. He was 600 years old when he finished the ark. The Bible doesn’t say this, but I will bet that he started the ark project when he was 20 something and just pushed it off to buy time. I imagine however that when the waters started to rise he found the motivation to finish it. What do you guys think? Be nice. I have visions of starting the 5 masted square rigged ship Prussian in 1/4 in. scale and that will surely push me over the edge. Bob |

I am currently working on 4 seperate but related projects in 1/48 scale . Having several projects on the go ( in the same scale) is an excellent learning process , and most important , its fun ! I cannot imagine building several projects(kits) in different scales at the same time -- just a tad off to me . . .

I try to tackle one project at a time. But I have taken a break in between to work on a smaller project.
