Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Re: Hms Victory

Well, three months have passed and I've only put on three shrouds.
It's been one thing after another; computer died, my kindle locked me out of wireless (pushed the wrong button), wife back to the...

Re: Basic Framing Question

Frames are built square to the keel. The keel is the foundation that everything else is based on.

Re: HMS Bounty Gaff question

John:
I wouldn't "redo" it. If you feel it is technically correct, go with that and say "finished".
Use what you have learned on the next build.
You might try to run a few extra lines that give a...

Re: HMS Bounty Gaff question

When underway the flag is flown from the masthead; when in port from the flagstaff at the stern (at least that was the rule of the USN in the mid 1960's). I would assume the RN did it the same...

Re: Hms Victory

Just a quick update:
Got all the shrouds spread out and ready to mount and lost my enthusiam again.
Had planned to start back next week but then the wife got sick and have been dealing with that. ...

Re: My Lack of activity

Walter:
I hope for a quick and speedy recovery with no complications.

Memory loss is common after ICU, and your mind has a way of forgetting traumatic experiences (again, common).

I too have had...

Re: Curtains???

As a matter of fact on some Captain's gigs and Admiral's barges the curtains were made of canvas. The art as practiced by some of the "old sailors" was called "tatting". Modern tatting is...

Re: Hms Victory

Thanks Tom.

The fabric that came with the kit. Wife says "some type of muslin". I used their material because I figured it wouldn't look too bad when furled and they provide enough material for...

Re: Hms Victory

Finally got the foreyard done; sail mounted and furled. I tried to do it like the real ship. It didn't come out well (I had to jury rig the attachements).
Will be replacing some blocks on the top...

Re: Hms Victory Another Rich Site

Thanks Jim:

I've changed so many things on this model already that I no longer think of it as "Victory as at Trafalgar" but just a model of a 100 gun ship of the royal navy. "That's good enough" is...

Re: Hms Victory Another Rich Site

Finished building the mainyard with blocks attached. Forecoarse sewed (thank you wife!), getting ready to cut down the sail to 1/3 size and attach to sail (furled). Fore topmast and top gallant...

Re: New Member

Richard: Welcome aboard.
My vote would be the Constitution. I have the kit in the closet waiting. It is a very involved kit and the scale allows for quite a bit of "kit bashing" for detail. It's...

Re: Phantom build 1

Steve:
You can also get one (much cheaper) from any craft store. Quilting and sewing uses these mats to lay-out,measure, and cut fabrics. They are "self healing" so you can cut material on...

Re: PlankOnBulkhead Book

Steve:
A very good book on planking is Donald Dressel's "Planking Techniques for Model Ship Builders".
Available at Amazon for $12.11 (no connection to Amazon here). I found it short and concise...
