Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Re: HMS Endeavour mast sizes need help

I made the masts for my Endeavor from scartch using Marquardt. Because I started out with the AL kit, I was committed to 1:60 scale. I enlarged the drawings on pages 84,85 & 88 and used them to make...

Re: guns on deck HMB Endevour

I have to belief in Marquardt's research. Built per the AOS book. If you think the Endeavour kit is inaccurate and poorly documented, you should see how the kit makers are "interperting" the Beagle.

Re: rigging for dummies

AOS = Anatomy of the Ship. I have lost track of who even publishes them anymore. At one time it was Phoenix Publications, then The Naval Institute Press, and now, I think it's Conway. I do not know...

Re: rigging for dummies

I've been using Marquardt's Eighteenth-century Rigs & Rigging as a source for most rigging information. I've combined what I've learned there with the AOS book on my particular ship, and feel like I...

Re: Sail material ?

I think I looked at almost everything available for sail material for my Endeavour, and decided that here just is no such thing as a good scale sail cloth. Note that may model is at 1:60 scale....

Re: first projecttoo much of challenge?

Hi Doug,
My first (and so far only) model boat is the Endeavour kit by AL. It was listed as "intermediate difficulty" in the Model Expo catalogue. I don't regret tackling something like that without...

On the Subject of Rigging

I've noticed that the number of posts about planking considearbly outnumber the posts about rigging. My best guess is that beginning modellers throw in the towel on their projects at somepoint before...

Re: Shrinking Rigging

Alan, I have considered the 50% white glue wash over the lines. I presently use a 50% mix to "fix" the tied knots in my rigging. Washing all the rigging with this mix might also hold the lines as...

Re: Chainplates,deadeyes, shrouds and ratlines

I used two appropriately bent pieces of metal paper clips to hold the top deadeye over the lower. I had to tweek the shrouds to get them neatly placed over the deadeyes, and a bent staple would not...

Shrinking Rigging

I have been using cotton thread to make my scale rope. I've read that I can expect this cotton line to "shrink" and pull tight when humid weather hits. Intuitively, I feel that the the lines should...

Re: Rigging at the bits

For what it's worth, I asked the same question on an alternate site, and was directed to some photos of the Freemantle replica. And there, I see that ropes running through the bits are tied onto...

Rigging at the bits

I've got lines running through the bits for jeers, clew lines, etc., but I cannot find any reference to just where these lines were tied off. I'm guessing that they were probably tied off at the head...

It looks like you're having too much fun. This hobby is supposed to be tedious to the point where all your time and patience are sucked right out of you. Pleasure and satisfaction come from looking...
