Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Good Morning Guys,
Just finished laying in my “Wale.” I followed the instructions, and tapered the ends from blkhd “J” to the end of the stern blocks (port & stbd) with a tad overhanging. I tapered each wale strake from 5/32” at J to 1/16” at K, L & M to the end. I’ll upload some pix directly. BTW, while perusing the manual, the errata sheet fell out, and it dawned on me that Rick has an older model and may or may not have the following info from MS Form WPPL2120. The form is not dated. “PLEASE NOTE: ON SHEET 6 OF 6, DETAIL 6-E, THE TACKLE IS INCORRECT. THE SINGLE BECKET BLOCK SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF THE TACKLE, NOT AT THE BOTTOM AS SHOWN. Snatch block: A snatch block is shown on the afterdeck port side. This block is a lead block for the running backstay fall. There is no such block on the starboard side of the current ship. This is not clearly illustrated in the plans. Eyebolts: An eyebolt is shown under the fore aft crosstree and also on the sides of the mast caps. These eyebolts are not used with the current rig. Main Topmast: There is a sheave in the very top of the main topmast. This sheave is not used with the current rig. The cheek block on side of the mast is used for the gaff topsail halliard. Fore Topmast: The fore topmast has a cheek block at the very top. This is incorrectly located. Bring down to where the jib topsail halliard attaches and use the cheek block for the halliard fall.” Rick, I think moving your shop to a larger room will definitely be worth while. I'd move mine out to my garage if it was heated & had a head & galley! Sal |
Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Just added 4 pix of the wale. Someone, please let me know if I did the tapering correctly.
Thanks, Sal |
Re: Pride of Baltimore II
It looks good from here, Sal.
You're right I have a 1996 kit. It had a 2 piece false keel which is one difference. The 2 pieces are shown on the 1994 plan. Thanks for listing the up-date to the instructions. I'll save a copy. Rick |
Re: Pride of Baltimore II
It looks great Sal! I'm thinking "where have I seen this before"... :)

Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Hi Dave, Sal, and others!
I'm still here! :banna: I haven't finished my new shop, yet. Unfortunately it has to be on hold for the moment. I've had to switch my "SHIPYARD" work to "YARD" work. This happens to a lot of us modelers during this season of the year. :( :( I'm still following this forum when I have the chance. I don't want to miss anything posted in any thread. Waiting for sunrise to continue my "YARD" duties, Rick |
Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Hi Guys,
I seem to be in the same mode as Rick! However, in addition to the yard work, I'm also in the process of remodeling a bathroom with a new tub surround, plumbing and lighting fixtures, new laminate flooring (with a water warranty) and fresh paint. Once the bathroom is finished, she wants me to replace a 12' X 32' deck on the back of the house. Don't know when I'll be getting back to planking the "Pride." Happy Mother's Day! Sal |
Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Rick...Sal...
Well, enough lounging about, the real world POBII has been rebuilt and sailed home while I've goofed off. This is just...wrong! I'm back in the mindset to get planking again...the model has sat too long on my desk, glaring at me while feeling neglected. The wife unit has jumped into beading with a vengence, so hopefully this will get me back on the stick. No new pics, hopefully there will soon be progress to show. Hopefully! How are you gents doing? Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Well, got my boatbuilding music on, and am slowly pressing forth with finishing the A belt of planking.
I may end up one strake short of a full belt (6 instead of 7). I was too conservative in tapering the planks higher up, and now am looking at some severe tapering at the bow and stern to fit all seven in. Either that, or I can lower the beltline between A and B by a slight bit. Either way, lesson learned for the B belt. The plank twist at the stern is presenting interesting and tedious challenges. The planks need to be edge bevelled to come anywhere close to butting up with the plank above. Mine are fitting, sort of. Each one is carefully hand crafted, getting better as I go. The twist can either be manhandled into position, or steam twisted, a challenge with the narrow ends. I'm thinking of twisting the piece before tapering, but then shaping and bevelling will be a tedious bit of work. Sometimes I think (know?) the real ships went together much faster. 4 and a half strakes down, many to go. Dave |
Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Good morning Dave and Sal,
I haven't had any time to work on my model. Hopefully I'll get back to it soon. Dave, I'm glad you're still there. I have left my computer sit idle for a while. Looking forward to any progress on your models! Mine is at about the same state as my last pic. Rick |
Re: Pride of Baltimore II
Good to see you around again Rick!
I'm just back into the planking routine, working on finishing the A belt. I misspoke in the last post, as the top belt indeed only has 6 strakes, so my concerns are lessened. Still have some serious tapering at the fore and aft ends of the last two planks, but nothing that looks too bad (i.e. "pointy"). Still working on my edge bevelling technique, difficult with the narrow planks. Plugging along...again. Hows the new workshop coming along? Dave |
