Stern Planking Problem
 

Hello everyone. I am building the Bluejacket Jefferson Davis http://shipmodeling.net/vb_forum/sh...35174#post35174 and am unsure about how to plank a certain area. I have started planking from the top down and the bottom up. The top planks form the underside of the elliptical stern. The bottom planks lay along the deadwood. At the point where they meet, it seems like the plank will have to make an impossible twist. I am thinking that I will plank the underside first since it will butt up pretty close to the sternpost. The deadwood plank would just be spilled to match the curve of the upper plank. But that would form a square(ish) joint between the two planks. All the other joints are very smooth and flowing. I thought of using a thicker piece on the deadwood, and then sanding it into somewhat of a curve. Does anyone else have any other ideas? Or pictures of that portion of a full sized ship? Hello. Greg. I am not an expert, but I would just suggest improvise and just use your best guess to solve your problem. We have all been there where when the plans don’t explain just how to do something just sit back and figure a way which will work the best to solve your problem. I had to do this a few times with my Victory project. You can look at my pictures in the gallery and others and you will see how folks solve those kinds of problems. One suggestion I would offer is you may have to taper you planking to make everything fit as best as you can. I am sure more qualified folks here will offer more or better suggestions. Good luck !

I've been hunting around for a reference... so far the best I come up with is some images of the Cutty Sark which are sort of like the attached sketch.

It's clearly tricky to sketch in 3d so the reality may not be exactly as I've sketched it. If you want to experiment a bit, I'd suggest using cut paper strips to aproximate the shape and test the scheme. I also suspect the planks will either have to be steam bent or spiled and would have significant curvature or edge bending to work into shape. You might also take a look at the planking around the stern of my pinky project which, while not as extream as your project, took a similar tact.

the area in the red circle is where the bottom planking stops and meets the side planking. Plan the planks so the seem of the lower and upper planks meet exactly at that location. you will need to bevel the edges of the planks so create a nice tight fit. The lower plank should have a slight twist in it so the upper edge meets the next plank with and creates little radius. If you have thicker planking stock that might be a good idea to use it.

Marc, Thank you for your encouragement. I am figuring out a lot more solutions than I expected to. But I am getting it done.

Jim, Thank you for all of your effort on my behalf. I did get a picture from a modeler on a different forum. He took extra pictures for me from the angle I requested. I never expected to get custom photos or drawings from anyone.

Dave, Yes, I think it will work better with a thicker lower plank that I can sand to shape.

To all readers:

Here the pic I received from the other forum. It helped for me to just see that the plank could be cut to pass around the sternpost. Now that I am down to the last 3 strakes, it is becoming easier to see that the plank will not be flat against the deadwood (like the garboard is). The very last frame holds the plank away from the sternpost. It will then bend inward forming a little convex curve. That curve will be covering the area that otherwise would be left open. I will take more pics when I get to this area, so everyone can see how it was accomplished (with a little help from my friends).[url=http://shipmodeling.net/photopost/data/1362/UndersidePlanking.jpg]

Thank you Marc. I see they you live in Royal Oak. I get to Detroit on a regular basis. Are there any ship museums that I could visit when I am there?
