ship features spreadsheet
 

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but I would like to propose a shared project, just not a ship model.

I am currently reading "Frigates of the Napoleonic Wars" and it occures to me that it would be helpful to all modellers and historians to have an Excel spreadsheet that listed all ships between lets say 1750 and 1850, sorted by nation, Navy or civilian. With tabs on each feature (Hull, deck equipment, Sail plan and features, auxilary boats, and I am open to other featurs that would be helpfull, books referenced (number of book next to each piece of information, book listings on last tab)

I envision that a modeller take the existing spreadsheet and add information from a book that he ownes, and then reposts the spreadsheet after review by a central authority, for others to work with.

any suggestions please, lets see if this would fly

Hey,
This sounds like a great idea, although it will be a long and difficult undertaking, i imagine it could well be worth it. I myself have a few books lying around that surely have snippets of information about specific ships in them. I would gladly add those informations with references of course to the file.

in conclusion:
i would be willing to give it a go, and could imagine that many other shipwrights have resources available to add to it too.

Hey, if the response to this threat is any indication on the interest then i think this project wont suceed. Perhaps a good thing that we realized this before starting and investing all that time.

Perhaps we get a few more responses.
PS: this is my way of trying to keep this thread on the front page.

Hello Robert,

Very good idea and I would be happy to contribute.

A few years ago, just for my own information, I did a similar sheet for the info published in Harold Underhills books. Lines, deck and sail plan, to see if between his volumes I could put together a set for small models. Though most of the sailing vessels he covers would fall into an 1850 to 1910 time window, if that was OK!

Hi Robert,

I am just off on a weeks holiday, but as soon as I return the Underhill spreadsheet will be located and uploaded. It was just roughly put together for my information, so if you want to change the format, tidy it up etc., feel free.

When that's completed; I had made a start on David MacGregors books. Again merchant sail, tea clippers etc.

Sounds great, I have started working on a list of ships using the supplied link still only in the A's so it's going to be a while. I think I am going to increase the date range, and a time line for equipment and rigging styles could be helpful, so a work in progress.

Hi Robert,
Attached (I hope) is an Excel spreadsheet with details of the plans printed in “Deep-Water Sail” by Harold Underhill. There are a couple of cross-references to other Underhill books that contain additional information on a particular vessel.
When I get a chance I’ll list the plans in “Sail Training and Cadet Ships”.
