Re: Hms Victory

ahoy all:

It's been almost two years since I was here, hit a bit of a snag and was hung up in the urge to model dept. Medical things, retirement issues, etc.

Well I think I'm past that now and have just recently returned to the model.

Oh my! What a mess. Starboard cat head missing in action, dust all over, lost plans, can't find my tools. I was a bit "Miffed" The wife ran me out of "my room" (she called it a "dump") and had a "field day", then announced "all clear".

Found the cat head , then found that all my CA glue has gone "off" so I couldn't glue it on!!

Got a small bottle for the present and the cat is secured.

The " plan of attack" will be two hours per day at first, working on the channels, dead-eyes, bowsprit, knight's heads and bumpkins. Once those are done, I'll return to the masts and spars. Hope to be doing some rigging in about a month or so.

I'll have to find the manual for the camera to figure out how to use it again before I can post new progress photo's.

If you recall I'm one of those "good enough" modelers. I'm not trying to build my model "exactly to scale" so I use short cuts whenever I can. So don't be too alarmed when I say I used some "thing" to replicate a part going forward in this build. After all, I started with the idea that Victory would be a "test bed" for ideas and modelling techniques that will help me build the Flying fish and Constitution at a later date (those will be to scale).

That's it for tonight. Back at it tomorrow.

Got the channels shaped sanded and painted as well as the bumpkings shaped and painted started on shaping the rudder ( in all seven hours logged on tthat).

Today will finish the rudder; notches to be cut and painted. This week I hope to lay the top runs of copper on the hull down to the water line.

I was going to mount the channels and install the dead-eyes, but then found that when I did the rudder, I might knock the channels off ( that's why the rudder now).

So the plan will be : Finish and mount the rudder, mount the channels, with dead-eyes in place, place the bowsprit and apply gammoning, then mount the knight's heads, with boomkins in place, and then rig the bobstays. Don't know how long that's going to take.

I hope to have photo's of the finished channels and rudder next week.

Got the rudder notched and coppered (not too fond of the appearance of the copper, too bright). Spectacle plate on the rudder, eyes placed on channels. Trying various methods of attaching blocks to channels (wire or thread). Tried uploading photo's, managed one, but it went to the last post! :=((

Try again, hope this works.

Bob:
Impressive, isn't it? Last one I saw was at night, that was truely impressive.

Just finished painting 62 large and 50 small dead-eyes, at about one drop of paint per five dead-eyes (my eyes are tired!). Also painted the last two pintel and gudgeon sets.

Next step is to shape the channels to the hull, place the dead-eyes in the channels, mount channels and rudder.. Hope to do that tomorrow. I have decided to use round tooth-picks as the braces for the channels, not to scale, I know, but expedient and faster than shaping wire to form braces. Next week hope to mount bumpkins to the kingposts and secure them in place. After that the bowsprit will be secured in place and gammoned.

Re: Hms Victory

Update:

It took me ten days but I got the channels on and the deadeyes in and the chains secured. Doesn't look as good as I thought it would but it will pass . I did the starboard side first as a test ( the "off side" won't show when mounted). The port side will be mounted with corrections to the process; hopefully, it will look better.

Monday I'll start on the port side channels and chains, then on to the king posts and bumpkins.

Product evaluation: I bought a small bottle of "Locktite" CA glue because I didn't have any small bottles around to refill. I find the product to be very good. It is labelled "precision" and holds .16 oz (5grams) of glue. The nozzle doesn't clog and it despenses a very small drop of glue at a time. It works very well for small areas.

Hi James , how does the locktight glue take paint , does it cover?

Re: Hms Victory

Gary:

It works just the same as any other CA glue in that regard. I 've applied small amounts of paint here and there over the glue and it covers nicely.
what I like about the product is the small bottle and nozzle. With practice, I've been able to apply very small (1/2, 1/4 drop) amounts directly to a surface; It really cuts down on the problem of too much glue applied to a surface. It will be outstanding on rigging (if i ever get to that phase of the build).

How's the weather in "New Scotland"? Oregon is starting to go into fall now, not much rain as yet.

Got the channels on the port side done (doesn't look any better than the starboard side though). The chain necklace material I used is better looking than wire but it requires more time "fiddling" with it.

What's going with you? Got a project going?

will give the locktight glue a try , thanks for the info
the weather is changing fast , fall is moving in , there is a chill in the air
and im not looking forward to another winter season , although , it offers more time for modelling .

getting ready to retire , getting my ducks in order so to speak , all is well .
id like to do a open frame model admirlity style , 1/48 - Druid perhaps by Harold Hann , researching his methods

cheers
