Mike: Congratulations; The hull looks great! As I said earlier, "consider this as a learning experience"; It appears that you learned quite well, your second layer will be a "breeze".

Re: Hms Victory

Well, it's been three months since I last did anything with my model of the Victory. But tonight I begin again. It seems that I hit a wall in my desire to work on the model but refused to force myself to work on it when "my heart' wasn't in it.

I realize that I am not alone in having hit a "low spot" in my ship modeling. I've read, and heard, of many modelers that "haven't worked on my model for months". I wonder, is it that common?

In any event, I start back on the masts and spars tonight!

G'day James
Yes I think it must be quite common,It is over a month since I have done anything. The model sits on a bench beside my computer.I want to do something but can't push myself to touch it,but I can feel the urge .So I guess I will wait until I pick up the modeling knife and it feels right.I think I have too many things on the go.
Good luck and keep us informed it might just spur me on
Regards
Bob Hey what does Tactum mean ? I get the rest

Re: Hms Victory

James;

Glad to hear you'll be working on her...thought we were going to wait till after the inaugeration till you got back to the workbench.

I'm kinda in a lull right now myself as I am waiting of some supplies and tools to be deliverd to Tammies before I can really get back to the model.

But even before I ordered those things I've had contracted a serious bug that has effected the work on my "Vic".

That bug is called the SV Peter Iredale (S4B)...I got one drawing (plan, side and hull contours) based on photographs after her grounding done by someone who probably knew about ships and about a dozen pictures of her. A couple the photographs are before she went aground, but most of them are from different perspectives after she did hit the beach and before the salvage crews tore her apart. I'm searching through all the websites that show these pictures trying to find out which of them have the original negatives, or at least a first generation photo...that way I can get best "best" high resolution scan possible. But boy do they want a mint for those pictures...I might spend more on photographic scans than I will on the model itself...that's how bad this bug is.

The NMM in Greenwich has some drawings of her that the builder had to submit to Lloyds for her classification but they are made on tracing paper and the curator of the documents division said that the drawings are too fragile to scan. I've asked him to give me a "guesstimate" for the cost of conservation and I have yet to hear back from him.

If all else fails I have a couple of good candidates for sister/cousin ships built within a year or two of her, at the same shipyard, that might be able to help me out...that is if there are any drawings of them that are not "too fragile".

Wish me luck with my "flu" and I am glad to "have you back".

Re: Hms Victory

Bob: Wikipedia says "tactum" means to hit, or beat; I've had a small placque with the saying for about 30 + years, given to me by a friend when I was a Police Officer. It seemed to be good advice then, and still is. "Don't let the bast&^%s wear you down".

Mike: Is that the steel hulled barque? That could be a long vacation from the Victory.

Re: Hms Victory

James:

Yes the 'Peter Iredale' was a steel hulled barque.

According to Thomas Iredale's website (great-grandson of the actual Peter Iredale) the 'Peter Iredale' was classified as S4B...meaning steel hulled four-masted barque. I do not know whether this is accepted nomenclature or just some "short hand" that he developed.

As to the the 'Peter Iredale' being a "vacation" from my Victory...well...that is not going to happen...I will work on the Victory till competion. At the most, I will be working on both ships concurrently, actual construction for the Victory while work on the the Peter Iredale will primarally be research and development (plan delevopment, parts list, parts procurement etc.)

Just out of curiosity, and no need to answer this, but was your politically inspired hiatus a democratic or republican inspired hiatus?

Mike

Mike: Two at a time, you are ambitious! Looking forward to your progress.

To answer your question: I was a "donkey" from the start, and am "most happy" how it turned out.

I am starting back slowly with the tops, and got the cross trees cut out last night. I will be putting them together on my next days off.

James:
What an amazing thread of postings. I just discovered this evening and will not have the time to follow the whole thing but will come back to it soon. I'm sure your postings will be a wealth of valuable information to me in my struggle to build the Victory.... long way to go but who cares. I'll get there eventually.
Thanks again for sharing your work.

Re: Hms Victory

Dave: You're welcome, and thank you.

I've hit a bit of a snag in the "ambition" dept. the last few months and haven't worked on Victory much at all. I'm slowly progressing on building the foremast now. I have the tops of all three masts assembled and am putting pieces together on the foremast as a test to see how it looks. I'll post photo's when the foremast is completed to get feedback on how it looks before starting on the other two.

Your model is coming along nicely, by the way. Well done.
