Re: Calling All Bluenoser's

Oky-Dokie,
The latest craze is the Sanding-Sealer.... The hull is sooo smooth, just hope the acrylic paint adheres o.k.
I am going to be most unhappy to cover the wood up with paint.... Never mind, my choice to build this and a conscious decision to complete as true as possible, anyway, would not look right without a coat of colored stuff. :)

I am actively looking at the deck-houses, (Again....), am thinking of re-working the companionway doors, they are split down the middle. Also looking very seriously at Coamings around the various deck components.... Where will it end?

The Jeweler still has my Anchor Hawse-Hole/Scroll work and plaques, don't think I'll get these back until next week.... No problem.

Tomorrow's another day, Sunday here and I don't have to go to work for a change.... Ship Modeling Day!!

Until then, have a great weekend all!!

Cheers....HOF.

Re: Calling All Bluenoser's

Greetings all,
After a perfectly "Horrendous" night, (Stomach Upset), I decided to not go to work, what better medicine than to work on my ship.... Nice and quiet.

Anyway, I modified the Companionways and deckhouse Door panels so that they have a distinct division down the middle, as they should have.
Door Knobs added in the form of Copper Nails from the kit, Nice!! Looks heaps better and I am so pleased I did the work, there was no re-work as such, just addition.

Also put corners on the above items, much, much better.

That's it for the day!!

Cheers....HOF.

Re: Calling All Bluenoser's

Greetings All,
Have been building/engineering today,
Things to make my life a little easir?

The first "Cab off the rank" was an adjustable "Waterline" marker....
Easy....

A lathe....
Almost complete, a "Spare" active head and I have only to complete the Tail....
Looks like It'll work o.k.
The Bed is from "Rimu" (Native Timber) well seasoned and damn hard!! Most components are from this beautiful wood.... (I had it to hand, left over from my kitchen re-build)

Mounting the tool/head was the challenge, a rebate in some additional Rimu components and consequent shaping to accept the curvature of the underside of the head/tool.
Mounting the tool? A challenge.... I'll take some photos if all o.k.

I think luck rather than good management has ensured that the tool is parallel to the bed....

Cheers....HOF.

Re: Calling All Bluenoser's

Hi

I have built the Bluenose II by AL and enjoyed the expereince very much. Unfortunately I moved house recently and have to abandon my byloved Blusenose model. So I decided to build another one. But this time I have chosen the Bluenose by Model Shipway. I would like to hear the opinion of fellow Bluenosers on the merits and otherwise between these two kits.

So far, I have found that the material for the keel plate and the frames from MS is better than AL. However, the some of frames are warpped (I think due to the heat generated from laser cutting) and I am trying to straighten them by adding stifferens and struts in between the frame and the keel plate. I am also a bit disappointed that the keel with the MS is all lime wood, the AL version has a teak keel bottom plate and stern plate which I think is better. I am going to line these parts with teak strips eventually. The other obvious point is that MS provided very detailed discription how how to do it, which is very useful for a beginner, like myself who had found out the things I should not be doing in the past, but I also finf that the AL instrcution, although not as detailed is adaquate enough for me to follow to complete the model without too much problem.

Cheers

Hi there chap!!
You had to "Abandon" you AL model? I'd be "Gutted!!" (Very Upset)

Anyway, you are very welcome here and that any post, (See Mine), is good input to this thread.

If others contribute, well and good, (I hope they do, but, the thread is more about comparing notes and helping each other in a common goal.

The spin-off is that in doing this, others will learn from the experience and the forum as a whole will be richer for the experience!!

So, lets begin.... Any photos posted yet? Sorry, no time look yet....
Anyway, the Model Shipway version? I am interested....

Kind Regards, Harry.

Hi apprentice,
I built the MS Bluenose about 2 years ago. I had a warped keel as well and also had to use stiffeners and square blocks in the corners of the bulkheads to streighten it and strengthen it.

(Unfortunately I had an early model digital camera at the time and it shows...)

Over all the kit is high quality but most everything you see on the deck must be made except for a few fittings. That could be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view.

This kit also has greater detail than the others, which I liked. I wouldn't hesitate to build another MS kit now, even for their lack of build pictures.

Re: Calling All Bluenoser's

Oky-Dokie,
Sod all done this weekend, (NZr's and Australians would say "Bugger" all),
Have not recieved my components back from the Jewellers, they are telling me next weekend....
Fingers and toes crossed.... I need to attach these before painting the Hull.

I went shopping today instead, looking at Lathes, I have chosen not too bad I think and am waiting for them to get "Tapers" to fit both the "Live" and "Dead" ends with 16mm chucks.

Distance between centers is 600mm and can purchase a bed to extend this up to 1 Meter (3ft)

This, I hope, will make Mast/Spar tapering a breeze!!

HOF.
