Default bluenose

I've inherited a Billings Bluenose 1:75 scale kit from an old friend who is better at building barns than boats. He put the bulkheads together then stopped - maybe about 16 years ago. The model meanwhile has not faired well - sails disintegrated, parts missing and no plans! I'm determined not to let the old lady die. I can visualise some of the hull build but I think I'll struggle with how many deadeyes, etc are need for the shrouds and where they figure around the rails. Also rigging will be tricky. I'm used to 18th century frigates, not schooners. Can anyone please help with the detail or point me in the right direction?

Regards,

Rudeau (Chris)

Hi Chris. I'm currently working on an AL version of the same kit with the same scale and just finishing the second layer of hull planking. I can't remember where I got the link but recently I picked up a zip file which contains pdf. copies of six articles which amount to almost a practicum for this particular build.

The file is about 8.5 mgs but it might give you a lot of helpful info... I've certainly found it useful. If you send me a personal message with your E-mail address I'll gladly send you over a copy of the file.

Chris
If you go to the Model Boaryard site there is a practicum for the AL Bluenose II. When you get the site click on "My Models" and select from the list Bluenose II. Somewhere in the text there is a link to the practicum.

That's a lot better "quality" set of articles (and more of them) than the file I already had, so Chris, I would disregard my post and follow Fred's link.

Thanks Brian and Fred for the quick advice and steer. The model dockyard bluenose articles are exactly what I'm looking for. It'll certainly keep me busy and out of trouble for a month or two!

Chris,
One thing that I forgot to mention, The practicum makes many references to “Bluenose II Saga of the Great Fishing Schooners. Measured Drawings by L.B. Jenson”. I managed to get my build finished without this book, but it was a struggle. Also I found comments in the practicum that didn't jibe with the real ship, since I had pictures that I had taken that were different than what was described in the practicum. But not to worry since you are the ships master and you can do what you darn well please.
Fred

Hi Fred,
I'm up and running. Appreciate you mentioning the differences between the practicum - which is detailed and looks very good although light on rigging and sails- and photographs of the real McCoy. Every time I look at another bluenose model (very popular it seems) the deck arrangements vary. No worries, you're right - it's my boat. I think I'll name it "Rednose" to avoid confusing it with the real thing!
Regards,
Chris

"Renaming" her is becoming quite popular... I'm about a 30 minute drive from her home port of Lunenburg (where she is being rebuilt) and around here quite a lot of people have taken to calling her Bluenose 2.5 in view of the extent of the project
