Default HMS Bounty Gaff question

I have just finished an old kit, AL 1:48 HMS Bounty 1783 , which I found to be very difficult since the instructions and plans were totally useless. However it is finished. I am now finishing the display case.
My question is to do with the position of the gaff on the mizzen mast. I have built the model without sails. My thinking is that if the ship was moored for any length of time they would have taken the sails down, which would mean the gaff would be in a lowered position. My question is, would the gaff be left in the down positon? The pictures I have of the ship at rest show the gaff raised with no sails, but is this technically correct?

For ships with the gaff designed to be lowered, it was normally lowered when no sails were attached. It is common to show models with them raised, though. I have seen real (modern) ships with lowerable gaffs shown raised without sails though, usually to carry a flag. In my opinion it does not really matter unless you are building a diorama. I've never seen a real ship on pedestals either!

Thanks for that. Would it be/is it normal practice to raise a flag if the ship is berthed?

When underway the flag is flown from the masthead; when in port from the flagstaff at the stern (at least that was the rule of the USN in the mid 1960's). I would assume the RN did it the same way.

Many modellers keep the gaff raised so as to give an impression of the missing sail (sort of fills up the back of the model).

Yes, I had a final look at the ship last night before I put it in its case - I have rigged it with the gaff down, and it does look sort of empty. I really don't know what to do - I'll have to redo some of the sheets as they are cut too short to just raise the gaff. As I've said, this ship nearly got the better of me - I just want it finished! However, as I've had to do a lot with this build, if I just put it aside for a week or two, calm down, and think about it, I'll probably do the right thing. Technically I think it is correct down, but 99.9% of people seeing it wouldn't get it, so I should probably just make it look "right". There are so many other things that aren't technically correct on the model its easy to justify - but if you start thinking like that you end up with nothing. Do it Correct if at all possible is my motto.............

John:
I wouldn't "redo" it. If you feel it is technically correct, go with that and say "finished".
Use what you have learned on the next build.
You might try to run a few extra lines that give a hint of the sail area, if they meet the "correct" test for you.

Re did it - didn't really take very long , and it does look good. Ship now in its case, and it must be ok as I see it every day and haven't had any urges to change things. Made little spot lights by cutting the fronts off multi-led torches and mounting the lens/leds on little brackets - runs off my wifes' cellphone charger.
Interesting that over the last few weeks some of the rigging has loosened, obviously due to humidity or temperature differences from the sunny room I made the model in over the past 2 years; thankfully not the standing rigging.
Next project will be to do the AL Bounty long boat. Hopefully it will be so easy in comparison.........
