I just received my MS Phantom kit and after reviewing the hull took some pictures and thought I would check with those who have worked on this kit already and see what you think of the photos. I am a bit concerned that the hull contains defects but since this is my first solid hull kit, I am not sure whats to be expected.
I took about 12 photos so I have a few more if anyone is interested. My initial concern was the discoloration on the bow and stern. There are a few nick and dings nothing really bad and nothing that couldn't be sanded out. Any thoughts appreciated. Don

That hull is fairly typical of the pre-shaped billet that is shaped in a solid hull kit. There is nothing wrong with the hull. The bow and stern look like that because that is where the hull was removed from the lathe it was shaped on. It was cut free on both ends and cleaned up by hand. They leave enough meat on it so after you shape it using the templates none of it will show. You will be removing all of those inaccuracies/blemishes in the smoothing and shaping process.
Hope that helps. Chuck |

I've built a couple of solid hulls and your Phantom hulls looks typical. As long as the general shape is there you should be able to shape it to hull templates pretty easily.

Thanks Chuck and Dennis,
I really appreciate your input, and I am glad to see the hull is typical of what to expect. I am glad I asked and I learned something today. Don

Don - looks ok to me - pretty much what MS sells - it will shape up nicely, you need not worry.
cheers

I am now almost done with my phantom and mine started about the same. I'm curious how you build has come along as this thread is a few months old. I can't get enough of seeing others completing great models.

Eric,
My phantom is still in the box..lol I started this post after examining the contents and felt that maybe the hull was damaged in someway. I picked up the Phantom and Bounty's launch back in Feb. MS was running a couple of sweet deals. I have been working on my Enterprise project these last few months. Just finished attaching the top gaff sail. I have a few line of rigging to run then attaching the flag then I'll be done. I have been looking at your Phantom photos and you've done a fantastic job! Don
