Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. Default Out of practice

Good morning fellow ship builders

It's not the weather for sailing back here in Bancroft, Onatrio, as the ground is white and most of the waterways are frozen. I sort of feel that way myself! It's been 30 years since I've build a model. As a teenager (yes I was that young once) I build almost a model a day (with exception of the Bluenose I which took longer). I had fallen in love with the Bluenose II back then, but couldn't afford her. Then I got married and other things took priority in my life. Now I'm back, but out of practice and working with what I feel are substandard assembly instructions. The Bluenose II kit I am using is the Artesania Latina if any of you are familiar with it. Good drawings (not to scale), but contradictory or missing instructions. Example, install the Bulwark Stanchions per drawing. This is difficult to do, when the deck planks are cut to 80 mm and the only measure 60 mm on the drawing. Anyway. My problem is the installation of the secondary planking. The primary planking is done and the Bulwarks are installed. Now, the secondary planking is supposed to start at the "CAPRAIL" whatever that is supposed to be. I think it might mean the waterline between the Bulwark and the first rail installed on the hull, but there is no instruction for planking the outside of the bulwarks, although it seems implied by the drawing and the instruction for installing the Taffrails. In essesse, do the Bulwarks get secoundary planking or not, and where should planking actually begin to get the best look (especially if the bulwarks get planked and are more visible (my oppinion) than the Keel. Help!!!!
Also, any opinions on painting the hull. They suggest Midnight Blue for above the waterline and reddish copper for below (I'm assuming the waterline is the point where the bulwark anf primary hull meet?). I'm just not accustomed to all this nautical language). My wife and I are undecided to whether make the Bluenose representative of the real schooner or go got a clear urathane finsish. I'm in a bit of a rush this morning, have a meeting in Otttawa (2.5 hours away) later today and have to get going. Thank you for any replied

Your shipmate, Marc, the cyclone

G,day Marc, The cap rail or capping rail goes on top of the bulwarks which is the part of the topsides between the deck and the cap rail, hope this helps, regards John, also the taffrail usually means the capping rail over the transom.

Thank you John

But, I get the impression then that I'm supposed to begin the secondary planking from the top most outside of the ship (top of the bulwark) right below where the bulwark rails and taffrails attach. This will require some care in getting things straight, since the stern bulwark is higher than the prow bulwark. Also, in my previous post, I actually ment the Upper and lower wales (and not the taffrail). Man, this language is confusing!

Marc

Hi Marc, usually most kits if they are double planked are double from the cap rail to the keel, if you go to the quick navigation page and click on shared projects and when the next page opens click list of members with similiar projects there are a few members who have built various bluenose models, who might be able to help more, best regards John.
