Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Hi Badger,
Does the kit have any details in the rigging plans showing the anchor buoy? Dumb question, other wise you wouldn't be asking. Anyway, anchor buoys were used in two ways.

One, as a way of marking the point where the anchor was dropped in relation to the ship. Used as a way to warn other ships in a harbor, so they don't cross the anchor line. Called a marker buoy, it was attached to the crown of the anchor with a tripping line (the line would pay out as needed for the depth required) so the anchor could be recovered in case it got stuck. The ship could retrieve the buoy from an other angle, and pull the anchor loose so it could be hauled in.

And two, sometimes at sea, a buoy was used to 'float' an anchor in deep waters (sea anchor). See this diagram (its of a more modern type vessel, but the principle is the same).

Hope this helps a little.

Hmm, I didn't see anything under Wolfram Zu Monfeld but if you click here and zoom up close you can just make out the anchor buoy attachment.

Its nice to see a picture of it.

Dave, Thanks for your reply. What a wonderful set of photos. Answered my question and more. Anyone who is involved in the rigging stage of their project should visit these pictures. I especially liked the cat's face engraved on the cathead! Thanks again
