Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Description » Basically about Percy & Small and their schooners, this is a wonderful book filled with interesting photos and plans (some of which are foldouts) and detailed descriptions of schooners built by the yard between 1894 and 1920. There is also a great deal about the actual construction of the ships, liberally illustrated with photos taken on site as they were being built. The book is a treasure for anyone interested in schooners. I bought it sight unseen, based only on a description posted by Amazon and I'm very pleased with it.

138 Maritime books - Factual
Description » This fascinating book tells the story behind the creation of the models used in the Hornblower series. Liberally illustrated with photos of both the models and their construction, as well many plans and diagrams and in-studio shots, it gives a behind-the-scenes look at what went into making the series look so authentic. The story is told by Martin Saville, a professional modelmaker who supervised the project from Petrozavodsk in Russia, where the models were built, to the huge tank at Pinewood film studios in London, where they were filmed. Published in the UK in 2000, this book may be hard to find (I found it quite by accident browsing in a second hand book shop) but it's well worth the search if the Napoleonic period interests you. Authored by Martin Saville

70 Hardware Supplies
Description » I just found the site for the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich, UK and well known for their ship models) and want to recommend it as a wonderful browsing experience. You can access not only the ship models but a wide variety of other nautical subjects and items from their collections. The pictures are well annotated and there is the option available of setting up your own collection and 'saving' items (and adding your own comments) for future reference.

Description » This is a well written, very detailed account of the battle of Trafalgar. It is interspersed with details of daily life aboard ship before and during battles and quotes liberally from many published accounts by those who were there. If you want to take a close look at what naval warfare was really like I highly recommend this book.

60 Maritime books - Factual
Description » By Howard Chapelle. This comprehensive book covers the development of the American fishing schooner from the early 19th century to the last working and racing schooners of the mid-30s. Well illustrated with many plans showing the vessel's development, the book also includes a 300 page glossary-appendix which annotates in words and drawings many details of the ships that are hard to find elsewhere. The interesting thing about this appendix is that most of the illustrations are taken from the author's notebooks.

123 Maritime books - Factual
Description » This is a marvelous book for anyone interested in the building of a re-creation of an 18th century ship and especially so if you are involved in building a model of the Sultana. I was referred to the book by the folks in Chestertown who run the Sultana site when I was looking for additional sources of information on the ship. It's filled with great photos by Lucien Niemeyer (who has produced several other lovely books on the Chesapeake area) of the actual build and has a great deal of historical information as well. In addition, it's a beautifully put together book.

11 Maritime books - Factual
Description » This is a beautiful, lavishly illustrated book about the history and glory of wooden craft of all sorts. Spectre, a boating writer, begins with the construction of Viking ships and progresses through the age of the fighting sail. He concludes with the building of present-day wooden power boats and yachts. Larkin's many fine photographs enhance the text. The price is not out of line for a work of this ilk, and many libraries will want to consider it. By Peter Spectre, David Larkin and Paul Rocheleau.
